Career at Colorado—She became the 15th woman to sweep the cross country races at the NCAA Championships when she won the freestyle and classical national titles in 2017, a year she was named the national women's Nordic skier of the year. In 28 career races, she has finished fifth or better in 20 of them with five victories. She has claimed five All-America honors in her career, three as a first-teamer and two second-team honors. She has competed at the U23 World Ski Championships in each of the past two seasons.
2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea—She competed in cross country skiing at the 2018 Winter Olympics for her home country, the Czech Republic … Competed in four races … Placed 28th out of 90 racers in the 10K freestyle … Finished 39th out of 47 in the 30K classic mass start … Finished 45th out of 68 competitors in the sprint classic and was 47th out of 61 starters in the skiathlon.
Career at Colorado—Became the 15th woman to sweep the cross country races at the NCAA Championships when she won the freestyle and classical national titles in 2017 … Was the 2017 Women’s Nordic Skier of the Year … Started 36 collegiate races and finished fifth or better in 25 of them with five victories and 16 podium finishes, ending her career ranked 13th in school history for the most podiums … Her seven All-America honors earned were one shy of the school record of eight ... She twice competed at the U23 World Ski Championships.
2018 (Senior)—Competed in just eight races, missing three meets when she was competing at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, but still managed to garner first-team All-RMISA honors … She won one race, the 10K freestyle qualifier to start the season at the U.S. Cross Country Championships, and had four other second-place finishes on the season before heading off to PyeongChang for the Olympics … Still managed to collect the fifth most points on the women’s Nordic RMISA MVP standings (188), despite missing out on four potential races … She returned in time for the 2018 NCAA Championships and finished sixth in both the classic and freestyle races to earn second-team All-America honors … She was awarded with CU’s Female Career Athletic Achievement Award at the end-of-the-year CUSPY Awards.
2017 (Junior)—She was named the 2017 National Skier of the Year for women's Nordic by both the USCSCA and FasterSkier.com. She became the 15th woman to sweep the Nordic races at the NCAA Championships and the fourth CU skier, joining Line Selnes (1998), current assistant coach Jana Rehemaa Weinberger (2006) and Maria Grevsgaard (2008). She won the 15K freestyle at the NCAA Championships by 21.1 seconds, becoming Colorado’s seventh freestyle national champion. Her first NCAA title came two days earlier in New Hampshire when she won the 5K classic race by 18.7 seconds, becoming CU’s first women’s classical national champion since 2011 and the seventh overall in the event. She was the top seed from the west heading into the NCAA Championships after drawing first-team All-RMISA honors. After the conclusion of the season she was named the 2017 RMISA Skier of the Year for women's Nordic in a vote by the league coaches. Her wins at the NCAA Championships gave her two more first-team All-America honors to her resume. She was also named the CU Co-Female Athlete of the Year with Dani Jones from track at the end-of-the-year CUSPY Awards. On the season, she finished fifth or better in all eight races she competed in and won five of them; she missed both Alaska meets due to a heel injury that was sustained when she competed at the 2017 FIS Nordic Junior and U23 World Ski Championships on the Czech Republic National Team, Jan. 31-Feb. 4. She was named the RMISA Skier of the Week for the Montana State Invitational after winning both the freestyle and classical races there. She opened the season with a win at the Utah Invitational in the 10K freestyle, which was her first race victory of her career.
2016 (Sophomore) – She continued her brilliant skiing in her sophomore campaign and finished all eight races in which she competed, brining home top 20 finishes in all eight races with six top 10s and two podium finishes. Her best finish of the season was a runner-up performance at the NCAA Championships in the freestyle race and her other podium was in classic, a third place finish at Solder Hollow at the Utah Invitational. She earned first-team All-America honors for her freestyle performance at the championships and was a second-team All-RMISA selection. She was the CU Athlete of the Week for her performance at the Montana State Invitational and was a finalist for the CU CUSPY for Female Athlete of the Year. She was a member of the National Collegiate All-Academic Ski Team for maintaining above a 3.5 cumulative grade point average and competing at the RMISA Championships/NCAA West Regional.
2015 (Freshman) - She competed in all events leading up to the NCAA Championships, all 12 races she finished in the top 15, 11 of those finishes being in the top 10 and five appearances on the podium. At the CU Invitational, she came in second place in the 5k freestyle event. Her successful season led her to being second-team All-American and the RMISA Skier-of-the-week winner. She was a finalist for Female Freshman Athlete of the Year.
Prior to CU—She skied for 10 years for TJ Dukla Liberec and has been skiing in FIS sanctioned races since 2010 eventually reaching the World Cup level prior to coming to CU in 2014. She first hit the podium in 2011 in an Austrian Juniors race, finishing second in a freestyle sprint race and then taking third in a 7.5K freestyle race. She participated in the Youth Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck, Austria, in 2012, taking 10th in the sprint freestyle final and 12th in the team mixed relay. The 2013 Junior World Ski Championships took place in her hometown of Liberec and she took 37th in the 5K freestyle, 38th in the classic sprint final, 44th in the 5/5K skiathlon and ninth in the 4x3.3K relay. She won a Juniors 1K sprint qualifier and took sixth in the final in Bruksvallarna, Sweden, in 2013, and a month later in St. Ulrich/Pillerseetal, Austria, she was the runner up in the 1.2K sprint final. She skied in the Slavic Cup in Nove Mesto na Morave, Czech Republic, winning a sprint qualifier and taking second in the final. Her World Cup debut also came at Nove Mesto where she was 45th in the sprint freestyle final and 23rd in the classic team sprint race. She earned two top 10s at the 2014 Junior World Champinoships in Via di Fiemme, Italy, taking ninth in the freestyle sprint final and eighth in the 4x3.3K relay. She traveled to Finland for another World Cup appearance in 2014 in Lahti, where she was 62nd in the freestyle sprint and 67th in the 10K freestyle race. She was seven times the champion of the Czech Republic and named the Athlete of the Year in 2012 for the North Bohemian region.
High School—She graduated from Gymnasium Jerynymova Liberec in May of 2013. Aside from skiing, she won three Czech Republic championships in roller skiing.
In the Classroom—She majoring in integrative physiology at Colorado and is applying for the BA/MS concurrent plan for her integrative physiology studies.
Personal—Petra Hyncicova was born May 1, 1994, in Liberec, Czech Republic, to Pavel Hyncica and Hana Hyncicova. She enjoys every type of sport, music, dance and traveling. She chose Colorado because of the “good reputation of the school and the ski team and because of the amazing place and beautiful surroundings.”
