  • Title:
    Senior Defensive Analyst/Linebackers

Clancy Pendergast joined the Colorado Buffaloes football staff in March 2026 as a senior defensive analyst working with the linebackers.

Pendergast arrived in Boulder with more than three decades of coaching experience at both the collegiate and professional levels, including multiple stops as a defensive coordinator in both college football and the National Football League. Over the course of his career he has helped develop numerous NFL players and coordinated defenses that ranked among the best in their respective conferences and leagues.

Prior to joining Colorado, Pendergast spent five seasons on the UCLA staff from 2021–25 following four seasons as defensive coordinator at USC. During his time with the Trojans, he oversaw several of the Pac-12’s most productive defensive units and coached multiple all-conference defenders.

Pendergast also previously served as USC’s defensive coordinator and secondary coach during the 2013 season, when the Trojan defense ranked among the nation’s top 25 in total defense, scoring defense, rushing defense, pass efficiency defense, sacks, interceptions and red zone defense. Safety Su’a Cravens earned first-team Freshman All-America honors that season.

Before returning to USC, Pendergast spent three seasons (2010–12) as defensive coordinator at California. His Golden Bear defenses quickly established themselves among the Pac-12’s best, leading the conference in total defense, pass defense and fewest first downs allowed during each of his first two seasons. During his tenure at Cal, the program produced nine NFL Draft selections, including first-round pick Cameron Jordan and 2011 Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year Mychal Kendricks.

California led the Pac-10 in sacks in 2010 and ranked among the conference leaders in scoring defense, rushing defense and pass efficiency defense while holding four opponents to 10 points or fewer. The Golden Bears again ranked among the Pac-12’s top defenses in 2011, finishing in the league’s top three in rushing defense, pass efficiency defense, sacks and tackles for loss while forcing 23 turnovers and earning a berth in the Holiday Bowl.

Pendergast also brings extensive NFL experience. He served as defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals from 2004–08, helping guide the franchise to the NFC Championship and a berth in Super Bowl XLIII following the 2008 season. During his time in Arizona, his defenses consistently ranked among the NFL’s best in takeaways and sacks while producing Pro Bowl players including linemen Bertrand Berry and Darnell Dockett and safety Adrian Wilson.

Pendergast later coached linebackers with the San Francisco 49ers in 2015, mentoring Pro Bowl linebacker NaVorro Bowman, who led the NFL in tackles that season.

Earlier in his NFL career, Pendergast coached with the Cleveland Browns in 2003 and spent seven seasons with the Dallas Cowboys (1996–2002). During his time in Dallas he coached defensive backs and nickel packages while working with All-Pro safety Darren Woodson and future Pro Bowl safety Roy Williams. The Cowboys ranked among the league’s top pass defenses during that stretch and made three NFC playoff appearances.

Pendergast began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Mississippi State in 1991 before moving to USC as a defensive assistant in 1992. He later served as a graduate assistant at Oklahoma for two seasons (1993–94), with all three programs earning bowl appearances during his tenure.

A graduate of the University of Arizona, Pendergast began his coaching career shortly after completing his degree in 1990.
