  • Title:
    Defensive Run Game Coordinator/Defensive Ends
George Helow joined the Colorado staff prior to the 2024 season as a senior defensive coach and was named defensive ends coach and defensive run game coordinator prior to the 2025 season.

In his current role, Helow oversees the defensive ends while coordinating the Buffaloes’ run defense structure, including front alignment, edge setting and gap integrity. His responsibilities also include assisting in defensive game planning and personnel development across the front seven.
Helow arrived in Boulder with extensive experience at the Power Four and SEC levels, including previous stops at Michigan, Maryland, Colorado State, Georgia, Florida State and Alabama.

At Michigan (2021–22), Helow coached the linebackers and helped guide a defense that ranked among the top 20 nationally in total defense and top 10 in scoring defense. Under his direction, linebacker Josh Ross earned third-team All-Big Ten honors, while freshman Junior Colson earned Freshman All-America recognition.

Prior to Michigan, Helow served as special teams coordinator and inside linebackers coach at Maryland in 2020. He previously spent four seasons at Colorado State (2016–19), coaching safeties and outside linebackers. In 2019, the Rams ranked seventh nationally in pass defense (181.6 yards per game), leading the Mountain West Conference. His defensive backs unit produced multiple all-conference performers.

Helow has been part of two national championship staffs. He served as a defensive graduate assistant at Florida State in 2013 when the Seminoles won the national title and worked as a defensive intern under Nick Saban at Alabama in 2012 when the Crimson Tide captured the BCS National Championship. He also spent two seasons at Georgia (2014–15) working with the safeties.

In December 2023, Helow joined Alabama as a special assistant during College Football Playoff preparation before transitioning to Colorado ahead of the 2024 season.
Helow played collegiately at the University of Mississippi from 2006–10, appearing in 38 games and contributing to back-to-back Cotton Bowl victories. He earned his degree in marketing from Ole Miss and later completed a master’s degree in adult education at Georgia.

A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Helow attended Bishop Kenny High School and Hargrave Military Academy before enrolling at Ole Miss.
