John Snelson returned to his alma mater for a second stint in the athletic department, as he began his new role as creative services manager for the football program on July 20, 2021.Â

Snelson, 33, left CU in 2017 to start his own company, Snelson Films, where he served as a director, cinematographer, editor and producer for multiple projects and series, including features and documentaries. In 2019, he was named creative director for Second Wind Creative, which is based in Lawrence, Kan., but he was able to work out of Denver. He was the director of photography, post-production manager, editor, and producer on multiple television and web projects ranging from feature-length documentary to short TV features.  He worked directly with television network clients focusing on development, production, post-production of non-fiction documentaries, series, features and branded content.Â

He returned to CU from Second Wind Creative, where some of his projects appeared on ESPN, FOX and the NFL Network and well as working with the UFC.

He had previously worked six years as the assistant director of sports video for CU athletics (2011-14) and then as football’s video production manager (2014-17). In his first time employed full-time by the department, he worked on video projects for the athletic department, including several award-winning productions that earned national acclaim, the most prominent being “The Rise,” a documentary on CU’s football resurgence in 2016. It aired nationally on the Pac-12 Network.

He originally joined the Colorado staff in 2010 as a student assistant in video and football operations, and he held the position until he graduated from the university in 2011. He has a bachelor’s degree in Economics with a business emphasis from CU.

Along with his supervisor, Jamie Guy, the two were honored twice with Heartland Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATA) Emmy awards, the first in 2014 for their work called “Seasons,” the story of a dream and the lifetime experience of being a Colorado Buffalo, and then again for 2015 for the series entitled, “Forward.” The duo was also nominated in 2015 for their “Forever” video, which was an all-encompassing look at what it means to be a Colorado Buffalo, on and off the field. “Forever” did win the 2015 FootballScoop FBS Video of the Year honor.

Prior to being hired full-time by CU, he was in coach support in Lincoln, Neb., for a technology company known as Hudl, a computer program the Buffs and many college use for video and in recruiting.

Born January 21, 1989 in Dallas, Texas, he graduated from Chatfield Senior High School in Littleton, Colo., in 2007, where he lettered in cross country and track. His hobbies include golf and photography.
