Kyre Hawkins is in his first year as graduate assistant for the defense, as he joined the Colorado staff on August 5, 2021 just in time for preseason practices.
Hawkins, 26, came to Colorado after a summer coaching internship with the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers, where he was a recipient of the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship. He previously was at Emery & Henry (Va.) College, where he coached the defensive line from June 2020 until he arrived in Boulder. He helped coach an E&H defense in the spring of 2021 (the delayed 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic) that allowed just 40 points total while compiling a 3-1 record in an abbreviated schedule. The Wasps led the country in sacks with 26 sacks (or 6.5 per game) and under his tutelage, boasted the conference defensive player of the year with three all-conference linemen (two earning first-team honors).
Prior to his time at E & H, he spent five months as the inside linebackers coach and run game coordinator at Alderson Broaddus (Va.) University (January to May, 2020). That followed a year at East Carolina University where he assisted the Pirates’ defensive line coach and defensive coordinator in several areas, while also leading the scout team meetings among his other duties.
Hawkins graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Sports and Recreation Management from James Madison University in 2017 (also earning a minor in General Business). He lettered four years as a linebacker for the Dukes, appearing in 55 games (46 starts) which included the FCS national title his junior year (and as the runner-up his senior season). JMU was 46-9 during his career, qualifying for the FCS playoffs all four seasons, with a 28-4 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play, winning two league titles his junior and senior seasons and sharing a third when he was a sophomore.
He recorded 340 career tackles at JMU (156 solo, including 23 tackles for loss of which 11 were quarterback sacks). He also had 14 passes broken up, five fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and an interception. He earned first-team all-CAA honors and second-team All-American recognition as a senior, when he was also the Duke’s defensive most valuable player and one of the team’s captains.
Hawkins also took courses toward a master’s degree in Sport and Recreation Leadership at JMU, when he was a graduate assistant for the 2018 season. He aided the full-time coaches in film breakdown and playbook installation, as well as running scout team meetings and coordinating the scout team in practice.
He was born on January 5, 1995 in Baltimore, Md., and graduated from its Dunbar High School, where he lettered in football, wrestling, track (sprints) and basketball. He led Dunbar to the state’s 1A championship his senior year and compiled an impressive 44-3 record in his weight division as a prep wrestler.
