Nicholas Gilbert
- Title:
- Quality Control/Offensive Line
Nick Gilbert is in his first year as a quality control specialist for the offense, assisting specifically with the offensive line, joining Karl Dorrell’s staff on February 23, 2022.
Gilbert, 33, came to Colorado from a second stint at the University of Idaho, where he was the Vandals’ offensive line coach for the 2021 season. Idaho had a solid running game, averaging 171 yards per in ranking 31st among 123 FCS schools and set a school record with seven rushing touchdowns in a single game. The season prior (2020), he was at the University of Memphis for a second time, this as the offensive quality control analyst, where he worked with the running backs and tight ends. He played an active role in scouting and recruiting and helped manage the team of graduate assistants.
Gilbert earned bachelor’s degree in Homeland Security in 2012 from Tiffin (Ohio) University, where he was a three-year letterman playing on the Dragons’ offensive line. He started his collegiate career at Erie Community College.
He began his coaching career at Division III Heidelberg University as a volunteer coaching the outside linebackers. He then moved on to Idaho under its first year coach, Paul Petrino, where he was a graduate assistant working with the offensive line for three seasons (2013-15). He got his first real taste of what aspects go into coaching, helping to coordinate practice and create offensive installs, playbooks and cut-ups. At Idaho, he earned his master’s degree in Education in 2016.
For the 2016 season, he was a graduate assistant at Memphis, and the same at Louisville in 2017 and 2018, both times again working with the offensive line. During his tenure at Memphis, the Tigers finished the 2016 season ranked first in total offense (464.7 yards per game) and second in passing (298.8 ypg) in the American Athletic Conference (AAC). He worked with a potent offense at Louisville as the Cardinals ranked first in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in total offense (544.9 yards, which was third in the nation) passing yards (299.8) and scoring (38.1 ppg) in 2017.
He worked for “another” CU in 2019, as he was the offensive line coach for Concord University (Athens. West Va.). In his time at both Idaho and Louisville, Gilbert helped mentor current NFL offensive linemen Jesse Davis (Miami Dolphins) and Geron Christian (Washington Redskins), who was also a third-round pick of Washington.
He was born May 8, 1989 in Syracuse, N.Y., and graduated from Onondaga (N.Y.) Junior/Senior High School where he lettered in football, basketball and lacrosse. His hobbies include golfing and fishing. An uncle, Joe Gilbert, is the offensive line coach for the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers and was on the staff for the team’s Super Bowl LV win over Kansas City. High school teammates included Mike Hart (running backs coach at Michigan) and Latavius Murray (Baltimore Ravens running back).
