AT COLORADO: This Season (Soph.)-
He missed spring drills and he continued rehabilitation from a second shoulder surgery. There was a chance he would be at 100 percent by the time August drills rolled around; if not, it was hopeful he wouldn?t miss a lot of work.2002 (Fr.-RS)-He sprained the same shoulder he had previously had surgery on, and it kept him out until the fourth week of the season. He played in one game (for eight snaps at guard against UCLA), but it was decided to have another surgery and he was lost for the season. He had participated on a limited basis during spring drills, as he completed rehabilitation following shoulder surgery he had in the fall of 2001.
2001 (Fr.)-He played in two early games (Colorado State, San Jose State), but a chronic shoulder injury flared up, and he eventually had mid-season surgery on Oct. 30 and was out for the season. Because he only appeared in two games, he was able to gain back his year of eligibility.
HIGH SCHOOL-He was considered by many to be the top recruit in the state of Colorado for 2000. He settled in at Denver?s J.K. Mullen High his senior year, his third school in as many years after moving from Orlando to Boulder prior to his junior season. As a senior, he earned Prep Football Report, PrepStar, Student Sports and SuperPrep All-American honors, in addition to being named All-Colorado (all classes), all-state (5A) and to the state?s blue chip list by both the Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News. PrepStar ranked him as the No. 5 offensive lineman in the Midlands, Student Sports as the No. 17 OL in the nation (SuperPrep tabbed him No. 35 in the same category and No. 22 overall in the Midlands), and PFR ranked him as the No. 118 player overall in the nation. Max Emfinger listed him among his National Nifty 250 Blue Chips. He made the Las Vegas Sun?s Super 11 second-team (best 33 players in the west). He was also an all-state and all-Centennial Conference as a junior and senior, and was an all-state selection as a sophomore in Florida. The Rocky referred to him as, "A superb pulling guard and pass protector." As a senior, he graded out to 95 percent on his assignments, did not allow a quarterback sack or pressure and was not called for a single penalty. Prior to his junior year, he was selected by Street & Smith's as one of the top 50 juniors to watch in the country (and made the magazine?s list as one of the top 50 seniors to watch a year later). Mullen was 11-2 his senior year under coach Mick McCall, reaching the 5A state semifinals; he played at Boulder as a junior, his first school year in Colorado. Lake Highland Prep in Orlando, Fla., was 13-1 his sophomore year under coach Tim Borcky, losing in the 3A state semifinal. He started as a freshman on the varsity, and at the end of his 7th and 8th grade years on the junior varsity was "called up" to the varsity and lettered both years. Thus, all told, he earned six varsity letters in one sport, an extreme rarity.
ACADEMICS-He is majoring in psychology at Colorado. Owned a 3.5 grade point average in high school.
PERSONAL-Born Sept. 20, 1982 in Orlando, Fla. Hobbies include snow and water skiing, scuba diving, fishing, golf, playing the drums and enjoying the music of Jimmy Buffett. His parents used to spend many summers in the Boulder area, and decided to move here permanently from Florida in 1999. He was the first commitment in CU?s 2001 recruiting class, verbally stating his intentions last April 6.
