AT COLORADO: 2003 (Sr.)?He started all 12 games at defensive end, earning second-team All-Big 12 Conference honors from the league coaches. His 45 tackles (35 solo) led all ends on the team, and he led the team in tackles for loss (12 for 50 yards), quarterback hurries (15) and tied for the lead in sacks (4). He had five or more tackles in six games, with a season and career-high of seven in the overtime win over Kansas, when he had three for losses including two sacks. His five hurries against Washington State were a team single-game high, and his fumble recovery at Baylor was his first (and only) one of his career. He won CU’s Dan Stavely Award as the outstanding defensive lineman in the spring, when he was one of 13 players to make the Buffs’ prestigious Spring Victory Club. He played at around 275 as a senior, up about 13-15 pounds from his junior year.
2002 (Jr.)?He earned honorable mention All-Big 12 honors from the league coaches, as he quietly put together a solid season. In playing in 13 games, starting 12 including the Alamo Bowl (he was sidetracked by a sprained knee at midseason, and he missed the Baylor game), he posted 34 tackles, 27 solo and 11 for losses, including four quarterback sacks. He also had three third down stops, nine pressures, two forced fumbles and five pass deflections. He had a season-high six tackles in the first meeting with Oklahoma, including two for losses, and a four tackle game at Nebraska were all comprised of TFL’s. In the bowl against Wisconsin, he had four tackles (three solo) and a quarterback pressure. He had quite a spring after enrolling in school in time for the spring semester, as he had nine tackles in CU’s three main scrimmages, including four sacks and six total tackles for loss. He was the speed-strength and conditioning champion in the spring both overall and for the 243 to 264-pound weight class; included in his results was a team-best 10-7 standing long jump. As a 4-2-4 transfer, he had two years of eligibility remaining and no redshirt year available to him upon his arrival at Colorado.
AT GARDEN CITY: 2001 (Soph.)?Rivals.com ranked him as the No. 23 JUCO player in the nation (the second defensive end), as he earned second-team all-conference honors. In helping GCCC to a 9-2 record, he was in on 55 tackles, with five quarterback sacks and three fumble recoveries. His coach at GCCC was Bob Larson.
AT NORTHWESTERN: 1999-2000 (Fr./Fr.-RS)?He redshirted as a true freshman at Northwestern in 1999, as Barnett recruited him before he was named head coach at CU. He was named scout of the week twice. In 2000, he played in two games at defensive end, making five tackles (three solo).
HIGH SCHOOL?As a senior, he garnered SuperPrep All-American honors, along with Prep Football Report All-Midwest status, first-team all-state and all-area by the Chicago Sun Times; the Chicago Tribune, Champaign News-Gazette and the IFSFCA also selected him first-team all-state. The Kane County Chronicle selected him as the player of the year on defense for the area. He earned first-team all-Upstate Eight Conference honors as a junior and senior, when he was also the league’s defensive player of the year for both years (and his team’s most valuable lineman as well). He earned all-state special mention as a junior by the Tribune, Sun-Times and News-Gazette his junior year. As a senior, he had 100 tackles (76 solo), including 31 for losses totaling 189 yards; he also had 17 hurries, forced six fumbles, blocked two kicks, had two pass deflections and had one fumble recovery. He was in on 108 tackles (81 solo) as a junior, with 16 for losses and 10 hurries. St. Charles was 31-3 in his three years as a starter, including a pair of 11-1 records and league titles as a sophomore and senior. He played for coach Buck Drach at St. Charles, where he also lettered in volleyball.
ACADEMICS?He is majoring in communication at Colorado.
PERSONAL?He was born June 26, 1981 in Corpus Christi, Texas. His hobbies include racing BMX bikes (he was a world cup champion in 1998). A grandfather (Sam Sublett) ran track at DePaul, and a younger sister (Dani) is a sophomore on the volleyball team at the University of North Carolina. He committed to CU in January 2001, before ever playing at Garden City. (First name is Gabriel; last name pronounced nine-heiss.)
