Mike Frink begins his first year with the Colorado coaching staff bringing over 34 years of coaching expertise from the high school, college and international levels. In addition to coaching in the United States, he has also gained coaching expertise in Brazil and China.

Frink is no stranger to the Boulder campus having played for the Buffaloes from 1963-65 and lettering under the late Sox Walseth. The Wheat Ridge, Colo. native is the lone CU alum to have played and be an assistant on the men’s basketball team.

“Mike is a great addition to our staff,” said head coach Ricardo Patton. “I think his passion for the University of Colorado and for this basketball program is pretty evident. He will bring a number of different strengths to the staff.”

Frink first launched his coaching career at Wheat Ridge High School from 1969-1976 where he coached legendary CU sports star and former NFL player Dave Logan. Frink later moved up to the collegiate ranks becoming an assistant at the University of Hawaii from 1976-78.

He later moved on to the University of Arizona (1978-1981) and then to the University of Washington (1981-85). At Washington, Frink coached future NBA all-star Detlef Schrempf and was named one of the top-15 coaches in the nation by Basketball Weekly. He guided the Huskies to back-to-back NCAA tournaments in 1984 and 1985.

The defunct World Basketball League (WBL) would be the next stop on his resume from 1987-1990 performing two separate stints as a head coach in Canada with Vancouver and Saskatoon.

Frink would remain on the international scene with his longest stint yet from 1990-98 with a head coaching position with the Confederation of Brazilian Basketball (CBB). While in Brazil, Frink earned a pair of honors by being an assistant on the 1992 and 1996 Brazilian Summer Olympic teams in Barcelona and Atlanta, respectively.

After a short return back to the States, Frink spent one year (2000-01) as the head coach and the Director of Basketball Operations of the Cincinnati Stuff of the International Basketball League (IBL). Frink then returned to international basketball traveling to China to be the head coach of Hangzhou of the Zheijiang Province from 2001-03 before returning to Boulder.

Frink, 61, graduated from CU in 1967 with degrees in Distributive Studies and Education.  He also served in the Colorado Army National Guard from 1968-74.

He is married to the former Rosimiriam Araujo and have two children, Dirk (26) and Briana (10).

His brother Pat, who was drafted into the NBA in 1968, also played for Walseth (1964-68) and remains 13th on the school’s career scoring list.
