Sundance Wicks
  • Title:
    Assistant Coach

Sundance Wicks completed his first season with the Colorado coaching staff from 2006-07.

Wicks, 26, came to Boulder from Northern State University (Aberdeen, S.D.) where he earned his undergraduate and masters degrees, in addition to playing his collegiate career under legendary head coach Don Meyer.

Wicks was the second assistant named to the CU coaching staff hailing from NSU in the last three years. Former assistant Paul Sather worked the Buffalo sidelines in 2004-05 and now is the head coach at Black Hills State University (Spearfish, S.D.).

During his playing days with the Wolves, Wicks ended his four-year career as the 25th all-time scorer in school history with 1,174 points and helped lead NSU to a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) titles in 2002 and 2003. Wicks was a two-time All-NSIC first team selection and started every game in his career (105 games). In the classroom, he was a two-time all-Conference academic selection (2001-02, 2002-03) and was awarded NSU’s Clark Swisher Male Athlete of the Year honor in 2002-03.

During his senior year, he led the Wolves in scoring (14.1 ppg.) and rebounding (7.5 rpg.), recorded eight double-doubles and was ranked in the NSIC top-10 in rebounding (2nd) and scoring (10th).

Wicks earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in international business (2003) and a Master of Science degree in health, physical education and coaching (2006). As an assistant at NSU (2004-06), he helped his alma mater reach the playoffs in both seasons and during the 2005-06 season helped the Wolves earn a berth at the 2005-06 NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen.

After completing his collegiate career at NSU, Wicks played professionally in Sweden’s top division for one year leading the Sodertalje Kings in scoring (18 ppg.) and rebounding (8.0 rpg.). While helping teach younger Swedish players the skills of the game, he helped lead the Kings to the semifinals of the Swedish Cup. He was also the only American listed in the top 20 of every statistical category.

At CU, Wicks will be responsible for film exchange and editing, individual workouts, in-state recruiting and the Ricardo Patton Basketball Camps.

“Sundance is a great addition to our staff and comes highly recommended by Don Meyer,” said Patton. “We went back to the pool of the Don Meyer coaching tree with great success from guys like (former assistant coaches) Jason Shelton and Paul Sather who both have moved on to become head coaches. He brings a great deal of energy and we look forward to him getting on the floor and working with our student-athletes.”

Born on August 9, 1980 in Gillette, Wyoming, Wicks graduated from Campbell County High School in Gillette in 1999 where he lettered in football, basketball and track. In 1999, he was named Wyoming’s Millward Simpson Athlete of the Year and was a member of two state titles in 1996-97 and 1998-99, in a decade where Gillette won 8 of 10 state titles.

“It is a privilege to be part of the University of Colorado team and its rich tradition in the fields of academics and athletics,” said Wicks. “After being on campus and touring the beautiful community I can see why people are attracted to the University of Colorado and Boulder.  I am extremely excited to work along side the great staff Coach Patton has assembled.  I feel blessed to have studied the game under a great teacher like Coach Don Meyer and now I am equally as excited to learn more and different aspects of the game from Coach Patton and the staff here at CU.”
