2020-21 (Freshman): Appeared in two games, playing in the final minute of home wins over Omaha (12/16) and California (1/14). Grabbed a rebound in the Omaha contest. Joined the Buffaloes as a walk-on prior to the 2020-21 season. Following the season he transferred to Colorado Mesa.
High School: A 2020 graduate of Centaurus High School. A two-time Class 4A All-State Second Team selection and all-conference pick. Averaged 19.2 points and 6.7 rebounds as a senior while shooting 56 percent from the field. Named the Boulder County (BOCO) Player of the Year in 2018-19, averaging 18.5 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game as the Warriors reached the “Great 8” of the state tournament. Lettered four times in track, recording multiple state finishes in the high jump. Played for the Colorado Titans club program in Erie.
Academics: Majored in Exploratory Studies at Colorado, interested in Integrative Physiology.
Personal: Born Oct. 12, 2001, in Wheat Ridge, Colo. The son of Nathan and Kacey Koonce. Has one sister, Kelsey. Both parents are former Colorado student-athletes. Nathan played basketball (1992-94) and Kacey was a member of CU’s 1993 Big Eight Champion volleyball team (1992-94). A grandfather, Steve Engel, played football for Colorado and the Cleveland Browns. He is a national jump rope champion and a yo-yo master. Can speak Spanish. Chose to walk on at Colorado because “…it’s in my blood. I’m the fifth-generation student-athlete to go to CU in my family.
