Cranmer on Nygren ? “In his final year, Karl should be one of the people to beat. He seems to be in great shape this year finishing third right behind Jesper in the race in Yellowstone and winning a race the following week in Breckenridge. Karl’s great race in Yellowstone should qualify him for the U-23 Championships in France in January.”
2008 ? Nygren saw action in four of CU’s six races this season and laid claim to five top-15 finishes in eight races, including three top-10 finishes in the classical discipline alone. Nygren posted his collegiate-best finish in the 10K classical, taking third with a 29:27.7 time. He just barely missed the top-five two weeks later, taking sixth in the 10K classical in New Mexico to end his season. Though he qualified for the NCAA Championships, Nygren was selected to represent the United States at the U-23 World Championships in Italy, forcing him to miss both the RMISA and NCAA Championships. At the conclusion of the season, Nygren earned a spot on the prestigious NCAA Skiing All-Academic Team by owning a 3.50 or better grade point average.
2007 ? In his first year of competition at Colorado, Nygren claimed six top-15 finishes and cracked the top-10 on three occasions. His first career top-10 effort in a freestyle race came at Montana State when he finished with a time of 26:57.81. His top career classical finish came at the New Mexico Invitational where he nabbed an eighth place finish for his third top-10 effort of the winter. Nygren qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time in a Colorado uniform, where he took 15th in the 20K classical race and 28th in the 10K freestyle.
At St. Olaf ? Nygren spent his first year of collegiate skiing at Division III St. Olaf College, a member of the central region and the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. He barely missed second place as he took third after clocking a 32:16.9 time in the men’s 10k classical in the 2006 CCSA Regional Championships.
High School ? Nygren was a five-time letterwinner, two-time all state, three-time all region and four-time all conference selection at Lakeville High School. He was selected the team MVP and varsity captain junior and senior year, as well as five-time hustle award recipient. He was also a three-time cross country running letterwinner, earning all-conference honorable mention honors twice while serving as team captain junior and senior year. He also was a three-time track and field letterwinner.
In the Classroom ? Nygren is majoring in mathematics at Colorado, and is also pursuing a minor in chemistry. He was named to the 2007 NCAA Skiing All-Academic Team.
Personal ? Karl William Nygren was born March 5, 1987 in Northfield, Minn. He is the son of Ken and Sarah Nygren, and has a brother Erik (23) and another brother Hans (18).
