2008 OUTLOOK: With exhausted indoor eligibility James is focused on scoring in the shot, discus, and hammer.

2007: Begley only competed during the indoor season, setting a pair of personal records in the Don Barrett Open. Begley took sixth place in the weight throw, with a heave of 57-07.75, and a fourth place finish in the shot put at 53-02.75. Begley’s top finishes each came at the Air Force All-Comers meet, where he took fourth in the weight throw (54-09.45) and second in the shot put (47-11.00). At the Big 12 Indoor Championships, Begley took 10th in the shot put, throwing to a mark of 51-05.00, and 14th place in the weight throw at 55-09.00.

2006: Begley participated in the weight throw and shot put during the indoor season. He recorded a personal record in the weight throw with a toss of 56-01.25 at the Air Force Invites, taking eighth at the event. Begley earned his best two placing of the indoor season at the Joe Davis Open. He placed third in the weight throw and took first in the shot put (51-11.00). At the indoor Big 12 championship, he placed 20th in the weight throw (53-03.75). During the outdoor season, Begley threw the hammer, shot put and discus, setting prs in all three. He recorded his first ever regional qualifying mark, throwing the discus for a pr of 170-03 at the Don Kirby Memorial Invite and took fourth. It was the best discus throw for the Buffs for the season. Begley’s pr in the shot put was 52-09.25, which he set at the Jack Christiansen Invite, taking sixth place. At the Colorado Invitational, he took eighth with a pr in the hammer throw (165-02). At Big 12 Outdoors, he took 13th in the hammer (159-04), 16th in the shot put (51-02.25) and 12th in the discus (165-05).

2005: Begley threw a personal best in the indoor weight throw (46-2.75) at the Colorado Open and the shot put (52-2.50) at the Air Force Classic. His best finish was at the Mt. SAC Relays during the outdoor season. Bagley took third place with a discus throw of 169-1, which was a personal record and regional qualifying throw. He also recorded a pr in the hammer throw (144-10) and the shot put (47-6.25). Both were at the Potts Invitational.

2004: Begley threw a personal record in the indoor shot put with a 46-02.75 mark at the Air Force Classic where he finished 10th. In the weight throw, he threw a 45-07.00 at the Colorado Invitational, good for eighth place. During the outdoor campaign, Begley finished with a team-best 168-11 discus throw at the Arizona State Invitational, as he earned third place overall. His best performance in the hammer throw also came at ASU where he finished 21st with a throw of 142-10.

HIGH SCHOOL: A four-year track letterwinner at Grandview High School in Aurora, Colo., Begley is the school record holder in both the shot put (56-1) and discus (180-10). As a senior, he earned all-conference honors in shot put and discus after becoming the state champion in both events. As a junior, Begley was the state runner-up in the discus and fifth in the state in shot put, earning all-conference recognition for both. His sophomore season, he earned all-conference honors in the discus throw. Begley was also a two-time letterwinner in football as a lineman.

ACADEMICS: Begley is a history major at Colorado and was recently named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

PERSONAL: James Albert Begley was born June 3, 1985 to parents Patrick and Susan Begley in Minot, N.D. His goal upon graduation from Colorado is to go to the Olympic Trials for shot put and discus. Begley is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and represents CU as a member of Big 12 SAAC. He is instrumental in putting together several events throughout the year, which includes Buffalo Hugs, the Angel Tree and Read With the Buffs.
