Barry on Jones: “Cecily just continues to have knee problems. It remains to be seen whether she can come back. She’s a good leader, smart and a team player. We’d like to have her on the court.”
This Season: Jones officially has two years of eligibility remaining, but has chosen to make this her senior season so she can go out with the class she originally came to Boulder with. Knee injuries have hampered her playing time as she has seen action in just 21 games in two seasons.
2003-04 (Sophomore): Jones’ season got off to a late start, as she wasn’t medically cleared to play until the Syracuse game on Dec. 30. She reinjured her knee on CU’s Fan Day on Nov. 2 and spent two months rehabilitating before she was able to participate. Jones played in 11 games, averaging 1.2 points per game and 1.5 rebounds per game. She got in for a season high nine minutes at Kansas State, scoring a season high four points and grabbing two rebounds. Jones was called into action big time against No. 1 Texas when senior Tera Bjorklund fouled out with eight minutes to play. She responded with two points and two boards in eight minutes, also playing very solid defense on UT center Stacy Stephens. Jones pulled down a career high seven rebounds, including six offensive, in CU’s loss to UCSB in the NCAA Tournament.
2002-03 (Redshirt Freshman): Jones saw minutes in 10 games and was productive in every one of them. She averaged 1.5 points a game and 1.3 rebounds in just 3.1 minutes a game. Her improved fitness and the development of her low post moves during the off season and throughout the basketball season helped her when she went in games, including Colorado’s first round NCAA Tournament victory over Brigham Young where she went 2-for-2 from the field and finished with four points, one rebound and one steal. She played a career-high seven minutes against Detroit-Mercy in the first game of her career after redshirting the 2001-02 season after recovering from a torn ACL, and scored two points while getting a rebound and a steal. Jones had four points and three rebounds in just three minutes against Buffalo and scored two points, while grabbing three rebounds in three minutes at Missouri. Of her total 13 rebounds she had on the season, six of them were offensive and most of her 15 points she scored came from offensive put backs.
2001-02 (Freshman): Redshirted the season while rehabilitating a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered in high school. Jones started practicing with the team in January doing drills and fitness. Was cleared for full participation following the end of the 2001-02 season.
High School: Jones, from Katy High School in Katy, Texas, just west of Houston, was among the top 30 prep centers in the nation according to the All-Star Girls Report. A two-year letterwinner at Katy, she entered her senior year on track to break the school record for career blocked shots before tearing her anterior cruciate just prior to the start of the season. As a junior, her Tiger squad went 21-10 under head coach Dean Darrow. Jones was a second-team all-district selection for District 19 5A, voted the toughest district in the state of Texas. She averaged 10.1 points per game, 7.3 rebounds per game, and just under one block per game a year ago. The Tigers finished in a three-way tie for second in the district last season, losing in a tiebreaker to qualify for the state tournament. As a sophomore under coach Robert Taylor, the Tigers went 18-11, with Jones earning honorable mention all-district honors. She was an integral part of that squad which advanced further in the regional quarterfinals than any other Katy High School team, boys or girls, had before. She lists the regional quarterfinal game against Hastings as the biggest moment of her high school career, shutting down their top player for a close game. Jones also played club volleyball for the Houston Juniors, making the national tournament in Denver as a freshman. She suffered a knee injury between her volleyball and basketball seasons that did not allow her to play basketball her freshman year. She was invited to the Adidas Top Ten Camp in Pittsburgh, Pa., in July of 2000. On the club side, Jones played for the Houston Hotshots in AAU
competition.
Off The Court: Jones was an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Katy High School student council, as well as Young Ladies for Cultural Awareness. She has a double major in sociology and communications. Cecily Beatrice Fannie Jones was born April 13, 1983 in Houston. She is the daughter of Leroy Jones and Marilyn Burton-Jones and her brother, Scotty (23), played on the basketball team at Vermont. Jones was also recruited by Houston, Arkansas, New Mexico, Baylor and Memphis.
