CAREER: Sarah Brown finished her collegiate career as one of the best defensive players in Colorado history. She is the career leader in caused turnovers (96), third in draw controls (369) and is fourth in ground balls (123). In the season record book, she owns the top two spots in caused turnovers with 34 in 2018 and 33 in 2017. She also has the fourth most in a single-season with 29 from 2016. Her 58 ground balls in 2018 is also the single-season record and her 81 draw controls in 2018 ranks third. She earned numerous awards throughout the years. She was a two-time IWLCA All-American, as well as and two-time Inside Lacrosse DI Media All-American. She recorded several conference and national player of the week honors. In 2018, she was named the first-ever Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year and was a member of the All-Pac-12 First Team. A solid student, she was named to the MPSF and Pac-12 All-Academic Teams.

SENIOR (2018): Brown finished her career at CU as an IWLCA first team All-American in her final season. She led the Buffs while setting the single-season record in caused turnovers with 34. She also led the team with 58 ground balls. She ranked second in the conference with 1.70 caused turnovers per game, which was 34th in the NCAA, and ranked fourth in the Pac-12 with 2.90 ground balls per game, which was 24th in the NCAA. Brown was also a strong force in the draw circle, ranking second on the team with 4.05 draw controls per game. Her speed helped the Buffs to a 86.8% on clears (334 of 385). Although she was listed as a defender, she scored her share of points for CU. In her final campaign, Brown led CU’s defenders with five goals and two assists for seven points. Her first goal of the season was against Denver on March 29, which was also the first free-position goal of her career. In that same game, she also tied a career-best with six caused turnovers. Two games later against Arizona State (April 8), Brown again scored a free-position goal and added an assist for a career-best two points. Her only other two-point game (one goal and one assist) was three contests later against Oregon on April 20, which helped the Buffs clinch the inaugural regular season Pac-12 Championship. Her other goals game against Stanford (April 13) and Stanford (April 29). Colorado advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year and was set to face Jacksonville (May 11) in the first round. Brown recorded a career-best eight draws controls to help propel CU to the win. The Buffs fell in the second round against Florida (May 13), which was the second match-up of the season for the two teams, but Brown did everything she could as she tied her career-high for ground balls (six) and added four draw controls and one caused turnover. For her performance during the season, Brown was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week and was named to the initial Tewaaraton Watch List. She was a Pac-12 First Team honoree who recorded a pair of conference defensive weekly honors and was selected the IWLCA DI Defensive Player of the Week on April 11 after helping the Buffs to wins over Southern California and Arizona State. Throughout the season, she was honored by Inside Lacrosse. She was named to the All-America preseason and midseason teams and then was selected to the third team at the end of the season. Brown also excelled in the classroom and was named to the Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention team.

JUNIOR (2017): Another standout season earned Brown the program’s first IWLCA Second Team All-American honor. Brown led the team in caused turnovers with 33, breaking the single season record of 29 that she set in 2016, and ranked second in the MPSF and 52nd in the NCAA for caused turnovers per game (1.65). In the 19 games she started, Brown had 39 ground balls and 41 draw controls, finishing second on the team for both. Brown’s quick defensive clears sparked the team’s transition and showed her capabilities as an offensive threat. Her three goals and one assist helped make Colorado the third highest scoring defense in the NCAA. Brown had one goal and two draw controls in the season-opener against No. 9 Northwestern, energizing the Buffs on both sides of the field in their overtime victory and first program win against a ranked team. Brown continued to shine against ranked opponents when she had a team-high four groundballs and three caused turnovers in the 11-7 win over No. 16 Massachusetts on Feb. 17. On March 5, the Buffs defeated Marquette for their sixth straight win of the season. In that contest, Brown recorded stats all over the field with one assist, five ground balls, one draw control and three caused turnovers. The junior contributed two draw controls against No. 6 Penn State in the 16-11 victory, CU’s first win on the road against a ranked team. In the win against Oregon on March 19, she had the second most caused turnovers in a game with four, as well as two groundballs and three draw controls. Against Stanford on April 7, she recorded her third goal of the season along with four groundballs, two draw controls and three caused turnovers, helping the Buffs to their first ever win over the Cardinal in a 13-8 decision. Brown had a standout game in the second matchup with SU in the semi-final game of the MPSF Tournament. With a season high of six groundballs, six draw controls, and six caused turnovers, Brown led the team to the conference championship game, breaking the record for the most groundballs and caused turnovers in a single game. Her performance during the season earned her a number of honors, including spots on the All-MPSF First Team, MPSF All-Tournament Team and IWLCA All-West/Midwest Region First Team. A good student, Brown was also selected to the MPSF All-Academic Team.
SOPHOMORE (2016): Brown emerged as the team’s top defender, earning first-team All-MPSF and IWLCA second-team All-West/Midwest Region honors, while starting all 18 games. She matched up with the opposing team’s top player in every game and shattered the school record for caused turnovers, finishing with 29 to break the previous mark of 18. She also had 46 draw controls and 24 ground balls, while pushing forward in transition to earn six assists. For the season, she ranked third in the MPSF and 34th nationally in caused turnovers per game (1.61), and ninth in the MPSF and 92nd nationally in draw controls per game (2.56). In addition to leading the team in caused turnovers, she was third on the team in draw controls and fifth in ground balls. Her six assists were best among the team’s defensive players. In her first career start on Feb. 12, she led the Buffs to an 11-10 win at Denver with three caused turnovers, three draw controls, two ground balls and an assist, while forcing a turnover in the final minute to seal the victory. She went on to be named MPSF Defensive Player of the Week on Feb. 15. Brown tied the school record with four caused turnovers and also had four draw controls in a 15-14 overtime win over James Madison on March 3. She recorded an assist in back-to-back games on March 5 and March 21 in wins over Central Connecticut and Marist, totaling five caused turnovers, four draw controls and three ground balls as the Buffs allowed just seven combined goals in those two games. Her fourth assist of the year came in a 16-3 win over San Diego State on April 10. She had a season-high five draw controls in a 23-0 shutout against Saint Mary’s (Calif.) on April 15 and then had an assist, two draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover in a 16-4 win over California on April 17. She was named CU Female Athlete of the Week on April 18 for her efforts against Saint Mary’s and Cal. Brown matched her season high with five draw controls in a 14-9 win at Oregon on April 24 to wrap up the regular season. She then assisted on a goal in an 11-3 win over the Ducks in the quarterfinals of the MPSF Tournament. For the season, she caused a turnover in 17 of the 18 games and earned a draw control in every contest. Brown helped CU to the second-best scoring defense in the MPSF and seventh-best scoring defense in the nation at 7.00 goals per game. Also an excellent student, she earned MPSF All-Academic honors.

FRESHMAN (2015): Brown played a total of two games for the Buffs in her first year and earned one point and two ground balls. In her debut as a Buff, she scored a goal against Presbyterian on March 2 to help CU to a 19-0 win.

HIGH SCHOOL: A local product, Brown lettered four years as a member of the Centaurus team before deciding to become a Buff (Boulder High did not have a girl’s lacrosse program). As a senior Brown was selected as a first team All-American as well as first team All-State, leading the Warriors to a 16-2 record and Metro League Championship. In her junior season Brown was named MVP of a team that finished 14-3 as well as once again being named to the All-American team and second team All-State team. Brown was also first team All-Conference for the 2013 season and she led the state in points scored. Her sophomore season was highlighted by a Jeffco League Championship as Brown helped the Warriors to a 13-5 record. She was named to the first team All-Conference team and was the recipient of the mental toughness award named by her coaches.

PERSONAL: Born on July 3, 1995 in Cohasset, Mass. Brown is the daughter of Mitch Brown and Angela Moss. Brown loves to sing and in her spare time plays in a band with her sisters folk band named Flatiron Junction. Her father, Mitch, lettered in football and wrestling at Saint Lawrence University and was a three-time All-American. Brown is a big football fan of both the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos, with her favorite athlete being Patriots’ tight end Rob Gronkowski. She enjoys listening to music to relax, particularly Rascal Flatts and The Neighborhood.
