Bio
Freshman (2001): Smullen did not appear in any games as a walk-on.
High School: Smullen graduated Quince Orchard as the school’s all-time leading scorer, notching 52 goals in four seasons under three different head coaches. Her freshman year Quince Orchard went 12-1 and won the Montgomery County Championship paced by Smullen’s 35 points (12 goals, 11 assists) all-county season. She repeated her all-county recognition as a sophomore and was the Coaches’ Award recipient and Washington Post Athlete of the Week with 23 goals including nine headers. She captained Quince Orchard’s 1999 team and was an All-Gaithersburg Gazette pick with 9 goals. Smullen was also on the Maryland Olympic Development Team her sophomore and junior seasons. She would captain the 2000 Cougars squad, score 8 goals, repeat her All-Gazette recognition and add all-state to her resume in her final prep season. On the club side, her Seneca Storm team advanced to the semifinal round of the regionals in Niagara Falls, N.Y. in 2001 and she was the club’s leading scorer during the spring 2000 season. She chose to walk-on at Colorado after visiting the University of Vermont and Washington & Lee campuses. The biggest moment of her prep career occured overseas when she played in the Gothia Cup in Sweden, playing teams from Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland. After reaching the finals in the ‘B’ bracket of the tournament, she nailed a header off a corner kick as time expired to break a 1-1 deadlock and avoid overtime.
Personal: Kelley Jean Smullen was born Aug. 5, 1983 in Stamford, Conn. She is the second-oldest of Richard and Elaine Smullen’s four children. An older half brother, Patrick, is an aspiring actor attending the New York Academy of Arts in Manhattan, N.Y. Kaitlin, 12, is following in her older sister’s footsteps and plays soccer in the seventh grade. She has a 2-year-old sister, Kayla, who was born when Kelley was 17. Her paternal grandfather, Dick Smullen, pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies. Smullen lived in Niwot, Colo. during her fourth and fifth grades of school before relocating to Gaithersburg where she would become an eventual prep teammate of incoming freshman Danielle Bickley their freshman and sophomore years. The two remain best friends and play club ball in Maryland.
In The Classroom: Smullen, who will carry a 3.49 prep grade point average into Boulder, would like to study kiniseology at Colorado as she aspires to go into athletic training after college.
