SENIOR (2013): Herzl had an outstanding senior campaign both on and off the pitch. She started all 23 games and played a team-high 2,115 minutes (which both rank ninth-best all-time in a single season at CU). Her strong defensive presence helped lead the Buffs to nine shutouts, including a record-setting five to begin the season. Herzl also took 11 shots, just one shy of her 2010 total, sending five on goal. Herzl received numerous post-season honors, including becoming the first Buff to ever earn a spot on an NSCAA Women’s Scholar All-America team. Herzl ranks 13th all-time at CU in minutes played, with 5,807 minutes spent on the pitch.

JUNIOR (2012): Herzl found her stride at both ends of the pitch in her junior season. She played in all 20 games, starting all but one, totaling 1,843 minutes. She helped the Buffs defense to eight shutouts, including a record-setting three to start the season. She took three shots, all on goal, and found the back of the net with the game-winner in CU’s defense-driven 3-0 victory over Arizona.

SOPHOMORE (2011): Herzl started nine of her 15 games played in 2011. She took four shots, two on goal, in 943 minutes. Two of her shots came against the University of California. The 1-0 win over the Golden Bears on October 21 was the Buffaloes’ first conference victory in the Pac-12. Herzl allowed zero goals in her 7:09 spent as the goalkeeper against the University of Utah on November 4.

FRESHMAN (2010): After making the spur-of-the-moment switch from defense, where she’s played all of her soccer career, to offense, Herzl’s freshman campaign got a lot more interesting. She switched positions during the game against UCLA, and soon after Herzl became a hero when she scored the game-winner to lift the Buffs over No. 10 UCLA 1-0 in double overtime. For a fitting encore, Herzl did the exact same thing in the following game against No. 6 Texas A&M when she scored the game-winner in overtime giving the Buffs their first ever win (2-1) in College Station, Texas.

HIGH SCHOOL: She earned seven total letters at Heritage High School, three in soccer and four in track & field. Heritage won its league championship all three years and finished second in state in 2008. Her junior season she earned first-team All-Continental League honors and as a freshman and senior was Heritage’s defensive MVP. She has been a member of the Colorado Storm Soccer Academy since 2005 and won the Colorado State Cup four straight years from 2007-10 and were runners-up in 2005 and ‘06.  She was named the MVP of the State Cup in 2010. In track & field, she ran the 800-meter relay with a personal best time of 2:24.

IN THE CLASSROOM: She is a communication major.

PERSONAL: Her full name is Elizabeth Kristen Herzl. She was born on April 19, 1992 to Alfred and Cynthia Herzl of Littleton, Colo. Her father played soccer and ran track & field at Lafayette College. Her older sister, Carolina played soccer for Lenoir-Rhyne College, and her older brother, Matthew, ran cross country and track & field at Colorado. She also has a younger brother, William. Her uncle, Tom Clement, ran track & field at Washington College (Md.), while another uncle, Sam Clement, played football at Lafayette College. She was a partner for the Special Olympics Unified Eagles basketball and she was a member of the women’s select jazz choir in 2009. Her hobbies include tennis, skiing, piano, scrap-booking and hiking.
