SENIOR (2016): Kraus helped the Buffs to one of their best seasons in school history, including an NCAA Tournament appearance and a second-place finish in the Pac-12. She started nine times as a center back and played in all 22 matches as either a central midfielder or a defender. She also had one assist against Drexel in a 5-0 win on Sept. 4. Kraus moved into the starting lineup on Oct. 9 to replace the injured Kahlia Hogg and became a key to CU’s season. She started the final nine matches, including upset wins over No. 10 California and No. 9 UCLA, and a draw with No. 23 Utah to end the regular season that sealed a tie for second place in the Pac-12. She also started both of CU’s NCAA tournament matches. For the year, the Buffs had a 0.74 goals-against average in the 1,220 minutes she was on the field, outscoring opponents 24-10 during that time. She also earned Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention for the third year in a row, carrying a 3.53 GPA.
JUNIOR (2015): Kraus played in 16 matches and started five times as a midfielder. She scored one goal and attempted three shots. CU had a 1.22 goals-against average in the 443 minutes she was on the pitch during the season. After starting the first two matches of the season, she missed four with an injury. But Kraus returned to make an immediate impact, netting the only goal of a 1-0 win over Denver to clinch the Colorado Cup. Her game-winner came in the 74th minute on a shot from the top of the 18-yard box. She also started matches against Villanova, Washington State and UCLA. She also earned honorable mention Academic All-Pac-12 for the second straight season with a 3.44 grade point average.
SOPHOMORE (2014): Kraus played in a career-high 20 matches and made her first career start against Northern Colorado in the Buffs’ second contest of the 2014 Colorado Cup. She saw at least 20 minutes of playing time in 11 contests and was on the pitch for a season-high 51 minutes in Colorado’s 1-0 victory over the UNC Bears. Kraus registered her first career point with an assist in CU’s season opener against Colorado State. She also had two shots during the season with one on goal.
FRESHMAN (2013): Kraus saw game time in 13 matches, including five conference and two post-season games. She played 10 or more minutes in seven games, playing a season-high 24 minutes at Washington State. Two of her three shots came in the post-season against ranked teams – No. 15 Denver and No. 19 BYU.
HIGH SCHOOL: Kraus was a four-year letter-winner and two-time Cathedral Catholic Scholar Athlete, Union Tribune All-Academic, first-team Western League and second-team All-San Diego CIF selection. Her freshman season she was named to the San Diego Hall of Champions Student Athlete Leadership Program. She scored her first goal as a sophomore and earned the Coaches Varsity Award. Kraus scored two goals, contributed three assists and was named second-team All-North County as the Dons went 18-7-5 and took home the 2012 San Diego CIF Championship her junior season. She stood out in her final season, scoring 10 goals and adding 10 assists to help the Dons to an outstanding 26-3-4 record. In 2013, the Dons won the Western League, Division III, San Diego CIF and California Regional Championships. As a senior, Kraus was selected to the Butch Lee Tournament Team and was named the CCHS MVP of winter sports. Kraus also excelled with the San Diego Surf club. The club won the Surf College Cup in 2011 and was victorious in back-to-back Surf Thanksgiving Cups (‘09 and ‘10) and won three straight Surf Cups (2008-10). Kraus and the Surf were also Cal South National Cup semi-finalists in 2009 and ‘10.
IN THE CLASSROOM: Kraus majors in sociology.
PERSONAL: Mikaela Jayne Kraus was born on Oct. 11, 1995 to David and Jennifer Kraus. Her sister, Kendall, plays soccer at Dartmouth. Kraus hopes to work in sports law after graduation. She is of Puerto Rican descent. She enjoys scuba diving, skiing and making homemade ravioli. She volunteers for multiple causes each year. She chose CU because she believes it is the perfect combination of academic and athletic opportunities.
