Freshman (2001): Gillaspie made 11 appearances and three starts as a freshman, scoring one goal and attempting four shots. She started the season-opener against Wisconsin and had one shot attempt. Her goal came on Sept. 7 against San Francisco, tying the game in the 67th minute. She also started against Fresno State and Denver.
High School: A four-year letterwinner for head coaches Nicole Kelly, Rich Manning and Mossey Kennedy, Gillaspie was selected to the 2001 Goal International ‘Kelme All Star Team’ in January. She was on the United States Olympic Development Program team both her freshman and sophomore years. Gillaspie was the captain of Los Alamitos team during her senior year. Her high school team took first in the Sunset League her freshman year, while taking second her sophomore year. Her club team, Cerritos Regional Soccer Club, took the CSL Premier League Championship both her freshman and junior years, while also taking the United States Youth Soccer Association Far West Regional National Championship her freshman year. Gillaspie led her club team in scoring her sophomore year with 16 goals and 10 assists, while ranking third in both her freshman and junior years. She also lettered in cross country her freshman year and in track for three years. She medalled in the 4x100, 200 and 400 meter races her freshman year, then took first place in the 4x100 California Interscholastic Federation Preliminary and qualified for the CIF Preliminary in the 200, 400 and 4x400, placing fourth in each event. Gillaspie also holds the school records in both the 200 and 400 meters. She selected Colorado over Washington State, San Diego State, Samford University and San Luis Obispo.
Personal: Born January 17, 1983, in Lakewood, Calif., Monique Elyse Gillaspie is the daughter of Ronald and Susan Gillaspie. Gillaspie chose CU because her campus visit showed her that the coaches were right for her and that she felt like she had a place here. She also liked how the team seemed like a family and how beautiful the campus was. She received the 2001 Outstanding Achievement Award - Women in Sports - Youth Motivation Task Force, Los Angeles County Award, along with making the Principal’s Honor Roll in 1997, 1999 and 2000. She is also a television actress, print model and noted songstress. She’s a member of the Screen Actors Guild and was featured in several television and TV commercials. She has also done print work for Teen Magazine (most recently appearing in the August issue) and the ‘It’s All About You,’ while also appearing on children’s soundtracks and music videos.
In The Classroom: Gillaspie plans to major in communications at CU.
