Buffs Head for MPSF Indoor Championships
February 21, 2018 | Track and Field
SEATTLE, WASH. – The University of Colorado track and field team is gearing up for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Indoor Track & Field Championships this Friday and Saturday, February 23-24.
The championships will be hosted by the University of Washington at the Dempsey Indoor, the site of many of the nation's top indoor meets.
SCHEDULE
Friday begins at 12 noon (PT) with the women's weight throw and concludes at 7:25 p.m. with the men's Distance Medley Relay. The first event Saturday takes off at 10:30 a.m. with the men's heptathlon 60-meter hurdles, before the men's 4 X 400 meter relay will end this year's championship meet at 2:40 p.m.
THE FIELD
The 2018 MPSF Championship features 22 universities comprised from members of the Pac-12, Big West, and West Coast Conferences. A meet record total of 37 teams will compete for a conference title, 22 for the women and 15 for the men. Making their debut in this year's championship event will be the women from UC Davis and the University of San Francisco.
On the women's side, USC is ranked second in the nation (158.86), Oregon is fifth (120.38), Stanford ninth (80.41), Colorado 18th (41.28), and Arizona State 20th (38.24). USC men rank fourth nationally (109.96), along with Oregon at No. 13 (58.30), and Stanford No. 16 (53.97). Across the nation, the MPSF as a conference holds a No. 2 index rating for the women and No. 3 for the men. Rankings are as of February 19, 2018, provided by www.ustfccca.org and www.tfrrs.org.
2017 IN REVIEW
The men recorded their highest MPSF finish in school history as they came in sixth overall. The highest previous finish in the MPSF by the men was 10th from last season. The Colorado women tied their highest finish in the MPSF Championships in fifth place. Last season the Buffs finished fifth as well.
QUOTABLE (Head Coach Mark Wetmore)
On Coming off record high finish in 2017
"I would be overly optimistic to expect this year's men's team to equal what happened last year. We are red-shirting some significant scorers from '17. I will have to look at '18 as a building year."
"The same is true of the women. We have had a difficult season with respect to injuries and illness. Maybe the hard weather around the country during the winter break contributed to that, or maybe I have made some mistakes in assignments. But there will also be some noticeable names missing from the women's roster."
On NCAA marks
"The likelihood is that everyone with a strong chance of advancing to the NCAA already has. There are a few who are trying in different events, or trying to shore-up marks that are vulnerable. Sixteen get invited to the NCAA in each event. If you are sitting 14th, you may need to race again and improve or defend that mark."
On potential high scorers for the Buffs
"Andrew Ghizzone will go into the meet as our highest ranked athlete, first in the Heptathlon, so he is a possible 10 points for the team. Erin Clark is ranked first in the 5k, but she will be running the 3k, instead. Erianna Henderson could possibly score in three events, Hurdles, Long Jump, and relay. Same with Rajon O'Quinn, who is entered in multiple events."
