Andrew Ghizzone Wins MPSF Heptathlon Title

February 24, 2018 | Track and Field

SEATTLE, Wash. – Senior Andrew Ghizzone becomes the University of Colorado's first MPSF Heptathlon champion here Saturday, winning the title with 5,519 total points.

The women finished sixth overall with 41 total points, just one place off their best MPSF finish, fifth. The men earned 49 total points to finish in sixth place to tie their best conference in school history.

WHAT HAPPENED – MPSF HEPTATHLON CHAMPION
Andrew Ghizzone etched his name in the Colorado record book Saturday by not only becoming the first ever MPSF heptathlon champion for the Buffs but also the first ever multi-event champion, indoors or outdoors for CU.

"Andrew had a great weekend. His family was out here. It's his senior year and he goes and PRs and wins the event. Very good day for Andrew, he should be sky high right now!"

Ghizzone was in second heading into the final three events of the heptathlon behind BYU's Kevin Nielsen.  They started off the day with the 60-meter hurdles where Ghizzone clocked a 8.36 time to come in second behind Nielsen. Next up was the pole vault, Ghizzone's best event. He finished first with a mark of 15-9/4.80 to earn 849 points.

Heading into the final event, Ghizzone knew he needed to cross the finish line six seconds ahead of Nielsen in order to earn enough points to move from second into first. He did just that earning a PR time of 2:36.81 to move into first and win the MPSF Heptathlon title. Ghizzone improved his own heptathlon school record (5,417) to 5,519 total points. Teammate Davis Butte had a success final day in the Heptathlon moving up two places to finish fifth and earn four points for the team.

HIGH POINT BUFFS
Senior Ryan Forsyth earned the most points on the men's side for the Buffs with 13 total points. He finished second in the 5,000 meters on Friday and added a fourth place finish in the 3,000 meters on Saturday Forsyth crossed the finish line in 7:56.81 to earn a PR and a fourth place finish.

"Zach [Perrin], who was one of our favorite point leaders got knocked down in the 3K," coach Wetmore said.  "It was kind of a troublesome weekend for the long-distance men's runners from a dropped baton to a dropped guy. But nevertheless, Ryan [Forsyth] rose up finished great, and ended up the high point scorer for the team!"

On the women's side, Elissa Mann earns the high point for the Buffs with a third place DMR relay finish from Friday and a second-place finish in the 800 meters Saturday. Mann clocked a 2:07.07 time to finish second and earn eight points.

"Elissa Mann the high point scorer for the women's team," Wetmore added. "What is notable with them is neither Elissa or Ryan were blue chip five-star high school recruits. So, evidence of patience and faithful hard work!"

BUFFS EARNING POINTS
Erin Clark and Makena Morely ran strong 3,000 meter races coming in second and third, respectively. Erin Clark earned a PR time of 9:05.72 to finish second in the 3,000 meters. Her time keeps her third on the all-time performers list for the 3,000 meters behind Jenny Barringer and Dani Jones. Morley finished third with a PR time of 9:06.61, which now moves her into fourth on the all-time performers list for CU.

"Makena and Erin were trying to do two things," coach Wetmore said. "They were trying to score points for the team and they were also trying to defend or improve their qualifying marks for the NCAA, and we got half of that. We got a good chunk of points for the team with 14 points, but they were both about one second slower than they needed to be to insure they will get into the NCAA in the 3K. They are both already in, with the 5,000 and it looks like one of them might end up in the 3,000. Nice big chunk of points for the team and Erin ends up one of our second-place finishes for the women over the weekend."

Eduardo Herrera finished fourth in the men's mile with a time of PR 4:04.43 to earn five points for the team. In the men's 800 meters, Justice Ramos came in eighth place with a time of 1:53.16.

Both 60-meter hurdles earned points for the Buffs as Alexander Billing finished in fifth place with a 8.09 time earning four points for the buffs. For the women Valerie Welch came in eighth crossing the finish line in 8.52 seconds.

The Buffs will close out the 2018 indoor season at the NCAA Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas on March 9-10.
