Three Buffs Notch Wins In Final Day Of Pac-12+/Big Ten Challenge

March 24, 2018 | Track and Field

Eriana Henderson, Sage Hurta and Ryan Forsyth each record first-place finishes while Henderson and Hurta notch personal-bests

TEMPE, Ariz. — The Pac-12+/Big Ten Challenge finished up Saturday at Arizona State's Sun Angel Stadium with the University of Colorado track and field team fielding three first-place finishes as well as numerous Buffs placing in the top five.

The women's team finished in sixth with 75.5 points, while the men's team finished in seventh with 64 points.

FIRST-PLACE FINISHES
Sophomore Eriana Henderson recorded a leap of 20-1.75 (6.14) in the women's long jump; in the women's 1,500-meter run, sophomore Sage Hurta notched a time of 4:17.04; and senior Ryan Forsyth recorded a time of 8:14.41 in the men's 3,000-meter run, all three marks or times the top in field in their respective events.

"For this point in the season and given the personnel that we brought here, I'm pretty happy" said head coach Mark Wetmore. "They did better than I expected."

PERSONAL BESTS
Henderson and Hurta both notched personal bests with their first-place finishes on Saturday. Henderson's mark in the long jump bested her previous high of 19-7.5 (5.98) that she set last year, while Hurta's mark in the 1,500-meter run topped her previous high of 4:18.42 that she set last year as well.

TOP FIVE FINISHES
In the men's pole vault, senior Andrew Ghizzone cleared 16-1.75 (4.92), good for fifth place. Senior Rajon O'Quinn tied for third place in the women's high jump with a jump of 5-8.75 (1.75). Sophomore Eduardo Herrera put in a time of 3:45.10 in the men's 1,500-meter run for a third-place finish. Junior Elissa Mann finished third in the women's 800-meter run with a time 2:06.93. In the women's 400-meter hurdles, junior Gabby Scott placed third with a time of 59.29 and Henderson got fifth with a time of 1:00.22.

Also, senior Lucy May finished fifth in the women's 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:29.30.

NEXT UP: The Buffaloes travel to California for the Stanford Invitational from March 30-31.

QUOTEABLE
Head Coach Mark Wetmore
On Sage Hurta winning the 1500m
"Sage's performance was a little surprising. It was a little faster than I expected. Distance runners at this time in the season are hunkered down into some pretty serious training with a lot of volume in their legs. For her to run 4:17, is great."

On Eriana Henderson winning the long jump
"That was a really big surprise. It's probably an NCAA preliminary round-qualifying mark, but a nice PR for her and 10 points for the team."

On Ryan Forsyth winning the 3000m
"Ryan had a careful, methodical, tactical win in the 3,000. It's not an event that can qualify for the NCAA and not a commonly run event, but a good opportunity for him and the other fellas to practice good tactics and racing instincts."

On what the team can improve on going into the rest of the outdoor season
"The way we can most improve is to get some banged up people healthy and fit. We have all of our NCAA Indoor Track competitors that we deliberately held out this meet, which are some of the best people on our team. We can, a month from now, be full strength and have everybody healthy and be quite a bit better."

On the additions of Davion Taylor and Aaron Haigler after they finished spring football practice
"I think they both have the opportunity down the road to help us some, but they're right out of spring ball. I think they had a very hard practice yesterday and then caught a flight last night. They're both a little sore coming into this competition. We look forward to them being exclusively track athletes for three or four weeks and see what kind of a contribution they can make."
