A two-sport star in football and baseball, he rushed for 1,235 yards in three seasons, the fifth most in school history at the time (and still 34th) ... His 6.33 yards per carry remains the fifth highest figure for any of CU’s 49 1,000-yard rushers ... In a 46-0 win over Colorado State in 1954, he gained 152 yards and scored twice—on only five carries for a gaudy 30.4 per carry ... He had three 100-yard games in his career ... An all-purpose back, he not only ran the ball, he often threw it (20 career completions for 273 yards), caught it (14 for 303, 3 TDs) and returned it (both punts and kickoffs) ... In baseball, he was primarily an outfielder, and led the Buffs in home runs (6) and runs batted in (26) as a senior in 1954 ... He was drafted by the Chicago Cardinals in the fourth round of the 1955 NFL Draft (38th player selected overall), playing six years for Chicago and then for the Denver Broncos in the inaugural season of the AFL (1960) ... He has remained very active in the Alumni C Club for 50 years (since 1962), and on at least two occasions he almost single-handedly kept the club from going inactive.Â
