COLORADO DROPS HEARTBREAKER TO KANSAS, 1-0
October 25, 1996 | Soccer
BOULDER, Colo. -Â For 87 minutes Friday, the University of Colorado women's soccer team played nearly flawless defense, controlling the pace of the game and attacking every Kansas attempt with intensity.
Â
Unfortunately for the Buffs, however, it was the final three minutes that counted most.
Â
Jayhawk Jackie Horton fired a 30-yard bullet just over the outstretched fingertips of Colorado keeper Nina Bjornstad in the game's g7th minute, ending a scoreless tie and giving Kansas a 1-0 win in the Big 12 matchup. Colorado falls to 4-9-1 (2-6 Big 12) with the loss and drops out of contention for the sixth and final berth in the Nov. 7- 10 conference tournament. Kansas moves to 6-10 (2-5) with the win.
Â
"Both teams probably had an equal number of chances," Colorado head coach Austin Daniels said. "But if you don't put your chances away, it's going to bite you -just like it did to us today."
Â
Daniels was, however, pleased with his first-year squad's effort.
Â
"They've worked hard all year long and they play with a lot of pride," Daniels said.
Â
Colorado will return to the playing field Sunday, when the Buffs challenge Missouri at 1 p.m. MST at the Pleasant View Soccer Complex in north Boulder. The game will be free and open to the public.
