COLORADO DEFEATS MISSOURI IN OVERTIME
October 27, 1996 | Soccer
BOULDER, Colo. - The University of Colorado women's soccer team (5-9-1 overall, 3-6-0 Big 12) defeated The University of Missouri (5-10-0 overall, 4-5-0 Big 12) today at home with a final score of 2-1 in overtime.
The first goal of the game was at 14:51, scored by Colorado's Elizabeth Larmore, dished off by Elizabeth Swain and fired into the right side of the goal from 20-yards out.
CU out shot Missouri 27-10, as its play was aggressively offensive, denying Missouri any goals until the very end of the second half.
The second goal of the game was scored by Missouri's Kate Dwyer with only two minutes and four seconds left in the game. The goal was assisted by Sara Taylor who gave the ball a short tap for an indirect kick. The 1-1 score resulted in overtime, with two periods of fifteen minutes each.
"We felt we should've won in regulation, as we had enough chances to win," Colorado head coach Austin Daniels said after the game. "But we eventually got it, playing an extra 30 minutes."
At 118:23 in overtime, Swain fired a 25-yard shot from right field, blazing past Missouri keeper Elizabeth La Tour, resulting in Colorado's lead of 2-1. The goal was assisted by Colorado's Jennifer Worcester.
Although the loss on Friday against Kansas prevents CU from competing in the Big 12 tournament, Daniels is still optimistic about the remainder of the season.
"It would have been nice to make it to the Big 12, but we needed this win and we got it, Daniels said. "We feel we can get more wins and end the season on a positive note."
To finish off their season, the Buffaloes have two more games, both to be played at home. The team competes against Northern Colorado this Wednesday at 3 p.m. and on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Hawaii.
