COLORADO TOPS NORTHERN COLORADO 2-0
October 30, 1996 | Soccer
BOULDER, Colo. - The University of Colorado women's soccer team won its second straight contest Wednesday afternoon, besting the visiting Bears of Northern Colorado 2-0.
Elizabeth Swain scored the Buffaloes first goal in the game's 19th minute on an unassisted left-footed chip-in from ten feet out that escaped UNC keeper Julie Rocha and gave Colorado a 1-0 lead. Freshman sensation Shawn Kenyon gave the Buffs all the insurance they would need four minutes later, when she used a header off assists from Brita Zoellner and Beth Matsumoto to push the Colorado advantage to 2-0.
Goalkeeper Nina Bjornstad and the suffocating Colorado defense took it from there, allowing the frustrated Bears only five shots on goal the entire contest, each of which was stopped by Bjornstad.
"We want to close out the season strong and I think everyone is committed to doing that," Colorado head coach Austin Daniels said. "We have played hard and have played with pride all year long. We're not going to let that slip."
The win moves Colorado to 6-9-1 (3-6 Big 12), while Northern Colorado drops to 13-5 with the loss.
The Buffs will close out their inaugural season Saturday when they host Hawaii at 1 p.m. MST at the Pleasant View Soccer Complex in north Boulder. The game will be free and open to the public.
