COLORADO WOMEN'S SOCCER STARTS NEW ERA WITH A TIE

August 31, 1996 | Soccer

PLEASANTON, Calif. -The inaugural season of University of Colorado women's soccer began with a bang of sorts, as the first year Buffs battled to a 1-1 overtime tie with Cal State Bakersfield here Saturday night.

That bang was off the head of freshman Shawn Kenyon, who tallied the Buffaloes' only score of the game with an unassisted header at 77 minutes elapsed. The goal was good enough to rally Colorado to the 1-1 standoff and erase the single goal deficit head coach Austin Daniels and Colorado had endured since nine minutes into the game.

"It was a bit disappointing not getting the win," Daniels said, "but we did a lot of nice things for a first game out."

Colorado will take its still-unbeaten record into its second game in as many days Sunday night against the University of California.

"Sunday will be a more difficult game," Daniels said. "Berkeley is a more established team. But if we build on what we did tonight, we'll do very well."

Colorado will take to the field against California at 8:00 p.m. MDT.
