HOME SWEET HOME: COLORADO EDGES OKLAHOMA STATE 2-1
September 27, 1996 | Soccer
BOULDER, Colo. - Seven games into its inaugural season, the University of Colorado women's soccer team is already showing signs of developing something that teams can struggle to achieve for years: home dominance.
Â
In those seven games on the season, Colorado has posted a 3-3-1 (1-2-0 Big 12) mark, a tally which includes a 3-0 showing at home. Big 12 rival Oklahoma State (5-2-1, 0-2-1) is the latest victim, falling to the Buffs 2-1 Friday afternoon at the Pleasant View Soccer Complex in Boulder.
Â
Freshman sensation Shawn Kenyon gave Colorado all the offense it would need, with two second-half goals in the span of just under three minutes offsetting a 1-0 Oklahoma State halftime lead and giving Colorado the victory.
Â
"We were determined to score," head coach Austin Daniels said. "We really wanted to concentrate on putting them away."
Â
The Cowgirls took an early lead on Kellie White's score at 4:45 before both offenses were forced to give way to two overpowering defensive efforts. Kenyon and the Buffaloes exploded in the second half, however, with goals at 51 :50 and 54:20, and a suffocating Colorado defense secured the victory.
Â
All told, Colorado outshot the Cowgirls 18 to 9, which included an 11 to 4 edge in the second half.
Â
"We felt we had a lot of chances in the first half we didn't put away," Daniels said. "We didn't want to let that happen in the second half."
Â
Colorado will return to game action Oct. 4, when the Buffaloes square off against No. 6 Texas A&M at 3 p.m. MDT. The contest will be the third of a four-game home stand for the first-year squad.
