COLORADO WOMEN'S SOCCER BEATS LSU 2-1, MOVE TO 1-1-1 ON SEASON
September 08, 1996 | Soccer
BOULDER, Colo. - The University of Colorado women's soccer team stepped into the win column for the first time in the program's short history Sunday, defeating Louisiana State 2-1 at the Pleasant View Soccer Complex in the Buffaloes' 1996 home opener.
Â
LSU opened the match's scoring with only four minutes of game time elapsed on a goal by forward Amanda Cook. Colorado answered with an Elizabeth Swain goal at 32 minutes, knotting the score at 1-1.
Â
Shawn Kenyon gave Colorado the lead early in the second half with a goal at 51 minutes, a hot shot from 30 feet out that passed LSU keeper Shelli Montevirgen and found the back of the Tiger net, and a suffocating Colorado defense cut short any hopes LSU had for a comeback in the game's final 39 minutes.
Â
"We need to be better, but I think we did a nice job today," Colorado head coach Austin Daniels said. "There are some things we did very well and some things we have to do better. We've got to stop giving up the early goal. We've got to concentrate from the very beginning."
Â
More than 1,500 fans attended the contest, a number which more than pleased Daniels.
Â
"It was a nice setting to play in," Daniels said. "We are very excited about the support we got today. I hope we kept them all entertained and I hope they'll all come back."
Â
All told, Colorado outshot LSU 32 to 11, registering 18 shots on goal to the Tigers' six. The Buffaloes move to 1-1-1 on the season with the victory.
Â
Colorado will take to the road next weekend, squaring off at Texas Tech on Friday and traveling to Baylor on Sunday. The games will be played at 3 p.m. and 12 p.m. MDT, respectively.
