KAITANJIAN, COLORADO SOCCER TEAM QUALIFY FOR BIG 12 TOURNAMENT

October 19, 1997 | Soccer

BOULDER, Colo. - The University of Colorado women's soccer team clinched a berth in the Big 12 Tournament with a 2-1 double overtime win over conference rival Texas Tech here Sunday.

The win moves Colorado to 5-9 overall and 5-3 in the conference, meaning the Buffs will have, at worst, the fifth seed in the six-team conference tournament.

Freshman Kelly Kaitanjian propelled the Buffaloes to the win, powering an unassisted goal past Texas Tech keeper Kellie McCallister with just seven minutes remaining in the second of two overtime periods. It was Kaitanjian's second goal of the season and her second game winner in overtime, as she recorded a similar score in the second overtime of the . Buffs' Sept. 7 win over Iowa State.

"Kelly was pretty wide open and she's a good finisher," head coach Austin Daniels said. "When she's in that spot, she's a good goal scorer."

Texas Tech drops to 5-11 overall and 4-6 in the Big 12 with the loss.

"We're very excited to get the win in overtime," Daniels said. "I thought it was a great collective effort by the entire team. We were able to sustain our play through a great deal of pressure in the second half and get by it."

Colorado freshman Melissa Cartmell opened the game's scoring in the fifth minute, taking an assist from Kaitanjian and beating McCallister with a header on the right side. Texas Tech knotted the score at one apiece when Jamie Woods followed a Lindsay Thompson shot and scored from in front in the 52nd minute, but the defenses took it from there, clamping down and preventing any further scoring until Kaitanjian's effort in the 112th minute.

Colorado keeper Sloane Cox was again impressive, allowing just the one goal while registering nine saves.

The Buffaloes must now prepare for their final road trip of the regular season, a journey which begins is Austin, Texas, on Friday with a 6 p.m. MDT game against the University of Texas and concludes with a 12 p.m. game Sunday at No. 6 Texas A&M.
