COLORADO SOCCER DROPS A 2-1 DECISION TO CONFERENCE FOE OKLAHOMA STATE
September 12, 1997 | Soccer
STILLWATER, Okla. - The University of Colorado soccer team lost its opening match of a six-game road trip Friday afternoon, falling to Oklahoma State, 2-1. The loss moves the Buffs to 1-4 on the
season, with a 1-2 record in the Big 12. Oklahoma State's record now moves to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
The Cowboys had held a 2-0 lead until CU scored its only goal of the game in the 78th minute, as Teri Fidley fed a shot to Melissa Cartmell who put in the header to score.
"It was a lack of concentration," said CU head coach Austin Daniels on Oklahoma State's 2-0 lead. "We need to improve on that to be successful."
Colorado was without sophomore sensation Shawn Kenyon, who sat the game out with a sore right iliotibial band (a thick, wide fascial layer that runs from the iliac crest to the knee joint). It marks the first time in her 21-game career that Kenyon did not start. However Kenyon is probable for Sunday's match against Oklahoma.
Oklahoma State's win evens the series between the two second year programs at 1-1. Last year Colorado won the match 2-1.
"We didn't capitalize on opportunities like we did last year," said Daniels.
In the first half of the contest, CU took eight shots on goal while OSU took five and a 1-0 halftime lead. In the second, the Buffs were limited to only three shots to Oklahoma State's nine. OSU scored its first goal in the 35th minute by Robin Rampey on an assist from Carrie Jones. In the 70th minute Merry Morical scored the eventual game winner on a feed from Andrea Larsen.
Colorado looks to improve upon their conference record as Sunday they head to Norman to play against Oklahoma.
