BUFF BOOTERS BEST OKLAHOMA 2-1

September 14, 1997 | Soccer

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Colorado women's soccer team beat the Oklahoma Sooners 2-1 here Sunday in the first-ever meeting between the two programs on the soccer field.

Colorado was paced by freshman Melissa Cartmell, who scored the game's first goal in the 77th minute on an assist from Donna Holyman, and by frosh Andrea Matassa, who notched the game winner in the 86th minute after receiving a direct-kick pass from Sarah Nowfel. Oklahoma's lone goal came in the 78th minute on a shot by Heater Morrison.

After battling through a scoreless first half and extended that stalemate over 30 minutes into the second stanza, Cartmell put Colorado on the board with a hot shot over the head of Sooner keeper Josie Miller in the game's 77th minute. Only one minute later, however, Morrison tied it up for Oklahoma, beating Colorado keeper Sloane Cox and finding the corner of the Colorado net.

Matassa and Nowfel took it from there for the Buffaloes, teaming up to register the game winner and move Colorado to 2-4 (2-2 Big 12) on the season. Oklahoma drops to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

"We showed a lot of heart in the second half, especially after going up a goal and watching the lead disappear so quickly," Colorado head coach Austin Daniels said. "We showed a lot of character."

Still, as Colorado moves to the third and fourth games of a six-game road trip next weekend, Daniels said, the team needs to concentrate on improving.

"It was nice that a lot of younger players stepped up this weekend," Daniels said, "but we need to step up as a team and be more consistent and more assertive."

The Buffaloes will travel to Massachusetts next Saturday and will challenge Harvard on Sunday, and Daniels is looking forward to both contests.

"Those will be two difficult games against Top-20 teams," Daniels said. "We look forward to the challenge."
