COLORADO WOMEN'S SOCCER EDGED BY NO. 20 UMASS IN DOUBLE OT
September 20, 1997 | Soccer
AMHERST, Mass. -The University of Colorado women's soccer team lost a hard-fought, 1-0 decision to the University of Massachusetts, the nation's 20th-ranked team, in double overtime Saturday.
Head coach Austin Daniels, however, was impressed with his team's performance on the home field of a school that has spent years among the nation's established elite.
"It was probably the best full game in the history of our program as far as playing well the entire game," Daniels said. "Unfortunately, we just couldn't pull out the win."
Colorado keeper Sloane Cox recorded a school-best 18 saves in the loss, allowing only the one tally with 11:09 remaining in the second of two overtimes. Kara Green of Massachusetts, with Cox tangled up on the ground after making a diving save, put in the gamewinner for the Minutewomen.
"Massachusetts is always good," Cox said, "and I expected a good game. With as many new players as they have, this seemed like a new team to me."
Colorado drops to 2-5 with the loss, while Massachusetts moves to an unblemished 6-0. Saturday's contest was the closest Massachusetts has come to a loss on the season, as the Minutewomen had beaten their previous five opponents by a combined score of 22-1.
"We raised our level of play up to the level of competition," Daniels said.
Colorado will take to the field again Sunday, when they square off against No. 13 Harvard at 11 a.m. MDT in Cambridge, Mass. That game will mark Colorado's fourth on the season against a ranked team, part of a schedule which Soccer Buzz online magazine named the third toughest in the country.
