COLORADO WOMEN'S SOCCER EDGED BY NO. 13 HARVARD

September 21, 1997 | Soccer

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Just one day after taking the nation's 20th-ranked team to double overtime before dropping a 1-0 decision, the University of Colorado women's soccer team lost another hard-fought, 1-0 contest, this time to No. 13 Harvard.

On Saturday, Colorado was edged by the University of Massachusetts on a goal with just over 11 minutes remaining in the second of two overtimes; on Sunday, Harvard used a header by Naomi Miller in the game's 68th minute to escape with a victory over the Buffaloes.

"It was a tough game, but we hung in there," Colorado head coach Austin Daniels said. "We battled hard and played a tough game against a ranked team."

The common factor in both Buff efforts over the weekend was keeper Sloane Cox, who, after tallying a school-record 18 saves against Massachusetts, racked up 13 denials versus Harvard. Cox's effort Sunday was turned in despite two injuries she suffered during the game, one in the 28th minute when she was cleated after making a save and the other a jammed finger in the game's 58th minute.

"Sloane is outstanding," Daniels said. "She kept us in both games. She dictated the pace of both games and helped us raise our level."

Still, Daniels said, it will be much nicer for the Buffaloes when tough losses tum into tough victories.

"We played a tough schedule to prepare for our conference opponents," Daniels said. "That's the most important thing. Hopefully, we'll take some momentum into those games."

Colorado, at 2-2 in the Big 12, currently stands in fifth place in the conference. Only the top six teams will qualify for the season-ending Big 12 tournament, a preseason goal of Daniels and his squad. The Buffaloes will return to conference play next weekend, when they travel to Missouri (Sept. 26) and to Kansas (Sept. 28) in the final leg of a three-week, six-game road swing.
