COLORADO, COX BLANK MISSOURI, MOVE TO 3-2 IN CONFERENCE
September 26, 1997 | Soccer
COLUMBIA, Mo. -The University of Colorado women's soccer team topped Big 12 rival Missouri Friday, using a timely offensive attack and the continued stellar play of keeper Sloane Cox to earn a 2-0 victory.
Colorado moves to 3-6 overall and 3-2 in the Big 12 with the victory. Missouri drops to 1-6 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
Cox's Friday effort marked the first shutout by a Colorado keeper on the year, and only the third in the program's two-year history. It also continued a recent hot streak for the Colorado junior, as she now has allowed just two goals in the squad's last three games and only six in her six games in goal on the season. Cox recorded nine saves Friday, giving her an impressive 58 for the year.
Offensively, Colorado was paced by senior Donna Holyman, who took an assist from freshman Kelly Kaitanjian and gave the Buffaloes a 1-0 lead in the game's 31st minute, placing a shot in the top right comer of the net, safely out of the reach of Missouri keeper Jackie Adamec. Freshman Nicole Perretti added the second Colorado goal only three minutes later, taking an assist from fellow frosh Kyley Ellenberger at the penalty line and burying the ball in the back of the net.
"It's nice to get our first shutout of the year and another conference win," head coach Austin Daniels said. "We played well for the entire 90 minutes, which is something we have stressed throughout the season."
Next up for the Buffs will be another conference battle, this a 12 p.m. MDT contest at Kansas on Sunday. Heading into a Friday game with Tulsa, Kansas was 2-6 overall and 0-4 in the Big 12.
