Cox Leads Buffs' Defense, Gives UP Only One Goal on 34 Shots
LINCOLN, Neb. - The University of Colorado women's soccer team dropped a tough 1-0 game to the No. 10 Nebraska Cornhuskers here today. The loss drops the Buffs to 4-7-1 on the season with a 1- 2-1 Big 12 mark, while the Huskers improve to 9-2-1 and 4-0-0, respectively.
Senior goalkeeper Sloan Cox, who registered 16 saves in the game, had yet another solid performance against the high-powered NU offense. Her save total for 1998 now totals 148 as she surpassed her own school record for saves in a season (she had 133 last season).
"Sloan played well and organized our defense," head coach Austin Daniels said. "She had a lot of great saves and managed to keep us in the game."
Kim Engesser, who is the leading scorer in the country, gave Nebraska its lone goal in the 35th minute. It came from a Kelly Ream assist, who was a teammate of Colorado's Heather Zonker and Suzy Kiefer at Arapahoe High School in Littleton, Colo.
Engesser managed six shots in the game, with the whole Colorado team having just three, including zero in the first half. Nebraska's shot total of 34 is a CU opponent record, breaking Massachusetts' total of 30 on Sept. 20, 1997.
"We weren't getting quality offense with two forwards," Daniels said. "I decided to go with three for the last 15 minutes. We weren't able to open it up until then and we created a lot of chances after that, but just couldn't score."
Colorado now returns how for a pair of games beginning with Texas A&M this Friday in a 4:00 p.m. contest. The Texas Longhorns then visit Boulder on Sunday at 1 :00 p.m. All home games are played at the Pleasant View Soccer Complex at the corner of Foothills Parkway and the Diagonal Highway in north Boulder. Admission is free.
