COLORADO WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO MARYLAND, 5-0

September 27, 1998 | Soccer

BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's soccer team (2-5-1) fell 5-0 to Atlantic Coast Conference foe Maryland (6-3-0) today in front of 325 fans. The loss came after a promising 4-0 victory over the University of Massachusetts on Friday. The Buffs were led by senior goalkeeper Sloane Cox, who despite giving up five goals on the afternoon, still managed to pull in 14 saves, her sixth double-digit save match of the season. Maryland was led by senior forward Keri Sarver, who notched three goals on the afternoon.

"We didn't play well, but Maryland is a good team," said head coach Austin Daniels. "We have to treat every game and every training session equally. We are too up and down and we must work constantly to become consistent."

The Terrapin scoring began at the 12:54 mark of the first half, when Jackie Mynarski deflected a comer kick from Robin McCullough to go up 1-0. Nine minutes later, the Terps were awarded a penalty kick which Emily Janss finished to put UM on top 2-0. Sarver then added her first goal at the 35:47 mark, when she picked up a loose ball in the Colorado backfield and beat Cox to make the score 3-0. The second half was more of the same, as Sarver added two more goals at 53:32 and 57:10 to wrap up the scoring at 5-0.

All told, the Buffs still managed to generate offensive opportunities despite the lack of scoring. Colorado had 16 shots, led by freshman forward Susan Kiefer's four, and forced Maryland keeper Ali Wolff to make six saves. Maryland had 27 shots with Colorado's goalkeepers Cox and freshman Danielle Bassett pulling in a combined 18 saves on the day.

Despite the 2-5-1 pre-conference record, the difficult schedule serves an important purpose. "This part of the season is very important for us," said Daniels, referring to the upcoming Big 12 season. "We play the better teams in our pre-conference schedule and hope it will translate to a better team when the conference season starts."

Colorado opens the Big 12 season this Friday, Oct. 2, against Oklahoma at 4 p.m. They will then face Oklahoma State on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 2:00 p.m. All Colorado women's soccer games are played at Pleasant View Soccer Complex in Boulder and admission is free. PVSC is located at the intersection of Foothills Parkway and the Diagonal Highway in North Boulder.
