Colorado Falls 6-2 To Missouri In Big 12 Goalfest

August 29, 1999 | Soccer

Columbia, Mo. -The University of Colorado women's soccer team (1-1-0, 1-1-0) lost to the University of Missouri (1-1-0, 1-1-0) 6-2 after the Tigers exploded for five unanswered second half goals Sunday afternoon in Big 12 conference action.

Colorado got on the scoreboard first when junior captain Melissa Cartmell received a through ball from sophomore Heather Zonker and finished to the lower left comer of the goal, just beating MU keeper Jackie Adamec in the 20th minute. Missouri answered when sophomore Sarah Sallee received the ball off a restart from a CU offsides call, dribbled 10 yards and beat CU keeper Danielle Bassett low and to her right with 14 minutes to play in the half.

The Buffs were not done scoring in the first half, however, as senior captain Shawn Kenyon stole the ball off the foot of MU defender Tamisha Ellis, carried it into the box and scored her first goal of the season to put CU up 2-1 in the 38th minute. Colorado took the 2-1 lead to the locker room at halftime, also edging MU in shots with eight to MU's seven, and saves with Bassett's three to Adamec's two.

The second half was all Missouri, as the Tigers would even the score when junior Kristin Boeker would drill a free kick from the edge of the box just 15 minutes into the half, beating Bassett in the lower right comer of the goal. Just minutes later the Tigers took the lead when junior forward Nikki Thole took a pass from senior Erin Grimsley and tucked it away to give MU the 3-2 lead with 29 minutes to play in the game. MU extended its lead with 15 minutes to play when Kate Dwyer one-timed a ball deflected off the crossbar on a comer kick to put the Tigers up 4-2, and on two Grimsley goals with four minutes to play and four seconds to play, respectively, to wrap up the scoresheet at 6-2

"I think once we gave up the free kick goal, our heads went down a little bit," said head coach Austin Daniels. "At that point I think we had a lapse which allowed them to get that second goal less than a minute later. After that, we got caught forward several times as we were trying to push offensively, and we got burned on it."

Bassett finished the game with nine saves to Ademac's six, and the Tigers outshot Colorado 21- 10 in the Buffs first loss of the 1999 season. This is the second consecutive year Missouri has managed to score six goals on CU.

The Buffs will return to Boulder to open the 1999 home season on Friday, Sept. 3 at 4:00 p.m. against Alabama-Birmingham. All CU game are at Pleasant View Soccer Complex at the corner of Foothills Pkwy. and the Diagonal Highway. Admission and parking are free.
