CU Shuts Out UAB In Home Opener

September 03, 1999 | Soccer

BOULDER, Colo. - The University of Colorado women's soccer team (2-1-0, 1-1-0) defeated the University of Alabama-Birmingham (1-2-0) here Friday afternoon by a final score of 3-0. The win marks the second home opener win for Colorado in its four year history, the last coming against Louisiana State Sept. 8, 1996 (2-1 ).

The shutout is a career first for sophomore goalkeeper Danielle Bassett who made five saves on the day. Colorado tallied 14 shots this afternoon, leading the way was junior forward Melissa Cartmell with five. Head coach Austin Daniels was very happy with the team's performance. "I was pleased that we were able to play well for 90 minutes, 11 Daniels said. "It's important that we try to establish ourselves at home. It gives us confidence, particularly since UAB is such a good team."

Colorado's first goal came seventeen minutes in from freshman midfielder Meghan Swanzy. Swanzy's goal came off a short comer kick taken by sophomore Suzy Kiefer. Kiefer passed the restart to junior Andrea Matassa who crossed to Melissa Cartmell. Cartmell knocked a short pass to Swanzy who blasted the ball into the back of the net, her first collegiate goal.

The Buffs continued the scoring at the 40-minute mark when Bassett punted past midfield to Cartmell, who ran onto the ball and finessed it past UAB goalkeeper Jen Braly on a breakaway. This marked the second time in CU soccer history that a goal was scored on an assist from a punt. The first coming when Jessica Wollow scored against Oklahoma (Oct. 2, 1998) after a punt by keeper Sloane Cox. The goal was number three for Cartmell this season as she has scored in five consecutive games dating back to Oct. 30 of last year.

Colorado led 2-0 at the half, thanks in part to their 9-2 advantage in shots, and 5-1 advantage in comer kicks. UAB managed only one shot on goal in the first half, which was swept up by Bassett. This marked the second consecutive game where the Buffs went into the half with two goals.

The scoring streak continued at the 72:36 mark as freshman forward Lindsey Galas raced down the field after classmate Tiffany Booth played her a through ball to the right side. Galas ran onto the ball, dribbled it past a UAB defender, and shot it, hitting the far-left post and ricocheting in past Braly. It was Galas' first collegiate goal, and Booth's first collegiate assist.

The first homestand of the 1999 season will continue on Sunday, as the Buffs will play the University of Wyoming (0-3-1) at I :00 p.m. at Pleasant View. PVSC is located at the comer of Foothills Pkwy. and the Diagonal Highway. All home matches are free to the public.
