Colorado Comes Back To Beat Wyoming 2-1
September 05, 1999 | Soccer
BOULDER, Colo. -The University of Colorado women's soccer team (3-1-0, 1-1-0) came back from a 1-0 deficit at the half to defeat the University of Wyoming (0-4-1) here Sunday afternoon by a final score of 2-I. This marks the second-ever come from behind win for Colorado, the last coming against Kansas on Aug. 27 (2-1).
Â
Colorado played an intense game, dominated by offense. The Buffs totaled 30 shots compared to Wyoming's six. Freshman forward Suzy Kiefer blasted the ball all afternoon tallying seven shots. "The chemistry of the team is working," Kiefer said. "We just wouldn't give up. Some of the shots weren't getting by, but we were relentless."
Â
Head coach Austin Daniels was extremely proud of his team after the game. "We dominated the whole game," said Daniels. "During the Kansas game, we were down and had to play catch-up. I think we lacked in intensity against KU. Today we kept pushing and never let up."
Â
The somewhat mellow game exploded in the 36th minute when Colorado's Sarah Nowfel was called for passing the ball back to keeper Danielle Bassett, who picked up the ball, a violation. Nowfel received a yellow card after blocking the ball on the Wyoming attempt to restart from six yards out. When play resumed twenty seconds later, the Cowgirls' Katrina Morton received a back pass from Sarah Stephens off the free kick and the ball squeezed past the line of CU
defenders. Wyoming's Jessica Piccone received a caution five minutes later for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Â
At halftime, despite the one goal deficit, the Buffs had 13 shots to UW's two. Sophomore defender Kendall Pata tallied her first career shot and junior forward Melissa Cartmell eclipsed the I 00 shot mark with her five, only the second player in CU history to reach that mark (Shawn Kenyon 1998). CU didn't allow any comer kicks during the first half, while taking three themselves.
Â
The second half didn't let up as both CU midfielder Andrea Matassa and UW forward Kelly McShane received yellow cards at the 63rd minute and 67th minutes marks respectively. CU got on the board at 69:52 as Kiefer sailed a through ball from freshman midfielder Meghan Swanzy past UW keeper Amanda Vandervort just off the far left post. The goal marked Kiefer's first of the season, third of her career.
Â
Three minutes later, freshman forward Lindsey Galas knocked in her second career goal after junior defender Allison Gausman blasted the initial shot which Vandervort could not handle. This was Galas' second goal in as many games, and her first game-winning goal. These homestand (Alabama-Birmingham and Wyoming) wins give CU the second consecutive year the Buffs have won back-to-back games at home, the last coming in September of last year against George Washington ( 4-1) and Massachusetts ( 4-0).
Â
Colorado travels to Chapel Hill to take on the University of North Carolina Friday, Sept. IO and remains to take on Duke Sunday, Sept. 12 in the Nike Carolina Classic. The Buffs return home the following weekend to take on the University of Alabama at 4:00 p.m. at Pleasant View Soccer Complex in Boulder. PVSC is located at the corner of Foothills Parkway and the Diagonal Highway. All CU home games are free.
