Colorado Shut Out By Oklahoma 1-0
October 01, 2000 | Soccer
BOULDER, Colo. -Â The University of Colorado women's soccer team (5-7, 1-3 Big 12) could not overcome a 1-0 halftime deficit and fell to the University of Oklahoma (7-5, 2-2 Big 12) by a final score of 1-0 here Sunday afternoon.
Â
"I thought we did a decent job with the style of play Oklahoma used against us," said head coach Austin Daniels. "We lost this game because we did not go to goal with a sense of urgency. We had our opportunities to score and did not finish them. Our players have to learn they need that urgency to put balls in the net."
Â
The Sooners got on the board at the 24:53 mark of the first half, when Jonette Coquat came off the bench to notch the first and only goal of the game. She took a pass from Krissy Dawson, which she then threaded with a well-struck shot to the bottom right corner of the Buffalo net, just past an outstretched Danielle Bassett. Oklahoma outshot Colorado 10-7 in the first half, forcing Bassett to make five saves to OU keeper Jana Cunningham's four.
Â
Colorado came out at halftime hard, with several scoring opportunities right of the bat. They outgunned Oklahoma 13 to three on the shot chart in the second half, missing five chances inside the Sooner 18 in the last five minutes of the game. CD's Jessi Burgener, Kristin Robertson and Melissa Cartmell all had opportunities to tie the match late, but were unable to convert. Robertson had perhaps the best opportunity, blasting a shot on the ground just inside the OU near post at the 86:58 mark, but Cunningham dove and was able to grab the ball for her 13th save and final of the game.
Â
Bassett finished the day with five saves, all of which came in the first half. CU outshot Oklahoma 13-3 in the second half, 20-13 for the game with Cunningham finishing with 13 saves on CD's 20 shots. OU edged Colorado 11-10 in fouls. Shannon Wing was the high shooter for the Sooners, taking five shots on the day with one on goal. Coquat was close behind with three shots, all on goal, including the game-winner. Burgener led the Buffs with six shots on the day, four on goal with junior midfielder Heather Zonker just behind with four shots.
Â
"I don't know what we're not doing," said Burgener. "Obviously we just aren't finishing our chances, and we need to do a better job of that. They got us a little bit in transition on the counter-attack. That is how they scored their goal, and we just didn't regroup and answer. I thought we really dominated them in the second half because we possessed the ball most of the half and Oklahoma just tried to get us in transition. We did not take advantage of the chances to score off of that possession. We'll just have to go out next weekend and do a better job of that."
Â
Colorado are 1-3 on the season in conference play after four games, and were 2-2 at this point a year ago. However, the Buffs have the identical record of 1-3 against the same four teams (Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and OU) that they had a season ago. Jessica Wollow earned her first start in almost two years Sunday, and made good on the opportunity, taking three shots, all of which were on goal.
Â
The Buffs are on the road this coming weekend to face Missouri (6-6-o, 2-2 Big 12) on Friday, Oct. 6 at 3:00 p.m. and then travel to Kansas to face the Jayhawks at noon on Sunday, Oct. 8. Missouri are on a two-game losing streak, falling 2-0 to Nebraska on Sept. 29 and 1-0 to Iowa State today. Kansas fell 3-0 to Nebraska on Sunday afternoon, and are 6-6 overall, 2-2 in Big 12 play.
