Colorado Falls 3-1 To Baylor
October 13, 2000 | Soccer
BOULDER, Colo. - Despite outshooting Baylor 15 to three in the second half, the University of Colorado women's soccer team (6-9, 2-5 Big 12) could not overcome a 2-0 halftime deficit and fell to the Bears (7-5-2, 4-2-1 Big 12) by a final score of 3-1 here Friday afternoon.
Â
"We didn't play well enough in the first half and that's what put us in the hole," said head coach Austin Daniels. "We have a saying with our team that every game is 90 minutes or more, but we only played well for 45. We've got to put our opportunities away. It's unlucky in a sense, but you're not going to win if you don't put those chances away."
Â
Baylor got on the board early, when senior forward Molly Cameron received a through ball that she took one vs. one to the Colorado goal, where she was initially blocked by Colorado goalkeeper Whitney Peterson. Cameron's shot deflected straight up, and Cameron ran under the ball and headed it into an open CU net at the 10:33 mark of the first half. The Bears got an insurance goal at the 27:09 mark, when freshman Cookie Day struck a frozen rope off a free kick from the top of the 18, beating Peterson in the left upper-ninety at the 27:09 mark.
Â
The Buffs' best chance of the first half came when freshman Kristin Robertson was able to maneuver behind the Baylor defense and get a shot past Bear keeper Dawn Greathouse with 2:40 left in the half. However Robertson's shot hit the post behind Greathouse, and the Baylor defense was able to recover and clear the ball out of the goalmouth. In all, Colorado outshot Baylor eight to six in the half, with Peterson making two saves to Greathouse's five.
Â
Baylor scored their third and final goal just 2:18 into the second half, when defender Whitney Barrett took a ball from Stephanie Dempsey struck a ball from 30 yards out. Her shot sailed over the outstretched hand of Peterson and dropped into the far post to give BU a 3-0 lead.
Â
Colorado would answer when senior midfielder Allison Gausman crushed a ball from 25 yards out to the far post at the 69:52 mark of the half. Classmate Melissa Cartmell had knocked a shot towards the Baylor net that was cleared to Gausman on the left side. She took two touches to evade the Baylor defenders and then shot it home for her second goal of the season, the sixth of her career. CU was able to create seven more shots in the remaining 20 minutes, forcing Greathouse to make five saves on the Colorado chances. The Buffs were unable to put the ball in the net despite getting 15 shots in the half to Baylor's three, giving Baylor the 3-1 win.
Â
"It seems like we've had trouble finishing all season," said Gausman. "We didn't play that well in the first half and I think in the second half we picked it up and increased our opportunities to score and pressured them a lot more. I just think that there are times when it takes us awhile to get into the game and it always ends up costing us."
Â
Cartmell's six shots in the game gave her a new single-season record for shots, as she now stands at 58 on the year, surpassing 1999 graduate Shawn Kenyon's record of 56, set in 1996. She also set reached the 200 plateau for career shots, already holding the record. Gausman moves to fifth on the CU career goals and points chart, with six and 18, respectively.
Â
The Buffs are both home and away next weekend, as they travel to Nebraska on Oct. 20 to face the Huskers in a 6:00 p.m. MDT tilt, and then return home to face Iowa State on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 1:00 p.m. at Pleasant View Soccer Complex.
