October 20, 2000 | Soccer
LINCOLN, Neb. -The University of Colorado women's soccer team (6-10, 2-6 Big 12) was unable to thwart a strong Husker offense Friday evening, falling to No. 4 University of Nebraska (16-1, 7-1 Big 12) by a score of 4-0.
Â
"I think in both halves we did a pretty good job," said head coach Austin Daniels. "The difference between the first and second halves was they did a better job of finishing their chances, and I think in the second half we did a better job of forcing them to take their chances from further out. I was happy with the intensity today, and we have to win the next two games so they've got to be intense."
Â
Nebraska got on the board in the 20th minute, when sophomore Christine Latham netted her conference-leading 1 ]1h goal of the season off assists from Breanna Boyd and Kori Saunders. She would assist the Huskers' second goal at the 21:24 mark, as Shannon Tanaka scored NU's second goal of the game. NU would get two more goals in the half, coming just 1:44 apart. The first was a breakaway situation where Lindsey Greenwood beat CU's Whitney Peterson to a one vs. one ball at the 36:22 mark, the next coming off a Lacey Woolf shot at the 38:00 mark.
In all, the Huskers got 18 shots in the first half to Colorado's one, with senior forward Melissa Cartmell rifling a shot just high of the NU net midway through the first half. Peterson hauled in four saves in the first half.
Â
The second half was better for the Buffaloes, as they held the Huskers scoreless through the next 45 minutes. Peterson also had a strong second half, grabbing five saves as the Buff defenders booted two balls out of the goalmouth as well. Colorado finished with 11 total saves, with Peterson snatching nine. Cartmell had another shot in the half, forcing NU keeper Karina LeBlanc to make a point-blank save to prevent a Buffalo goal. NU finished with 35 shots to CU's two.
Â
Earning her first start in a Buffalo uniform was sophomore Heather Hawkins, who also earned her first playing time of the season. Junior midfielder Heather Zonker suffered an ankle sprain late in the first half, and her status for Sunday's match with Iowa State is day-to-day.
Â
The Buffs return home to face the Cyclones on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 1:00 p.m. at Pleasant View Soccer Complex. The game is sponsored by Old Chicago pizza, as the first 300 fans to the game will receive a complimentary slice of pizza. CU's final regular season match is Friday, Oct. 27 as the Buffs welcome Texas Tech to PVSC. The game will mark the final home match for Colorado's eight seniors, the first recruiting class at the University of Colorado.
