Colorado Tops Iowa State 1-0
October 22, 2000 | Soccer
BOULDER, Colo. - The University of Colorado women's soccer team (7-10, 3-6 Big 12) overcame a rainy and cold climate to defeat Iowa State University (7-8-2, 3-5-1 Big 12) by a score of 1-0 here Sunday afternoon.
Â
"I am pleased that our team came out here today and did what they had to do," said head coach Austin Daniels. "We needed to win this game to stay alive in the Big 12 tournament picture, and we did just that. It was a tough game. There weren't a lot of chances for either team. We were able to capitalize on a free kick which, in a game like this, that's what it usually comes down to."
Â
Neither team could get on the board in the first half, as Colorado took eight shots to Iowa State's four. Colorado keeper Whitney Peterson had two saves in the first half to Cyclone keeper Beth Chapman's six. Aimee Bugay also had a save in the first half, getting in front of an ISU shot to preserve the 0-0 first half tie.
Â
The Buffs earned their first goal in two games off a free kick by Sarah Nowfel. The Buff senior lofted a ball into the goal box after an !SU foul, where classmate and CU all-time leading scorer Melissa Cartmell nodded home the ball at the 57:42 mark of the game. !SU keeper Beth Chapman and Cartmell both went up for the ball, but the 5-9 Cartmell was able to get over the top of Chapman and get the ball into the net.
Â
"It was hard for us to get adjusted to the field because it was so slippery and the ball was skidding everywhere," said Cartmell. "But we finally got adjusted to the field in the second half and we came out ready to go."
Â
Iowa State continued to threaten to tie the match late, however stellar goalkeeping by Peterson and sturdy defensive play by the Buffs' back four of Aimee Bugay, Kendall Pata, Tiffany Booth and Nowfel kept the Cyclones out of the Buffalo net. Peterson finished the game with five total saves to Chapman's six. Colorado outshot Iowa State 11 to eight overall, with ISU topping CU four to three in shots in the second half. Katie Antongiovanni led the Cyclones with three shots on the game, while Cartmell led the Buffs with three shots as well.
Â
Cartmell, the Buffs' career leader in points, goals, assists, shots and games started can now add games played to that list of records, having started and played in her 75th game as a Buffalo, a new CU record for career games played. The old record of 74 was held by former Buff Shawn Kenyon, set from 1996-99. The goal was Cartmell's seventh of the season and fifth game-winner of the year, 11th all-time. Nowfel's assist was her third of the season, the fifth of her career. Peterson earned her second and perhaps most important shutout of the season.
Â
"She (Peterson) definitely played great," said Daniels. "She's got good hands, she's confident and the team is confident in her. You really can't ask for anything more."
Â
The Buffs' Big 12 Postseason Tournament picture is still unclear, as the only teams that have been eliminated for contention to head to San Antonio for postseason play are Oklahoma State (0-8-1) and Texas Tech (2-7). The seventh and eighth spots in the tournament are still up for grabs between the Buffs (3-6), Iowa State (3-5-1) and Kansas (3-5-1). Colorado will face Texas Tech on Friday, Oct. 27 at 3:00 p.m., while Iowa State will take on No. 4 Nebraska at 2:00 p.m. MDT on Friday as well. Kansas will face Missouri on the 27th, at a time to be announced.
Â
A Colorado win over Tech and a tie or loss by Iowa State to Nebraska would clinch a spot for the Buffs in the tournament, with CU taking the eighth spot. A tie or loss by Kansas as well would put Colorado in contention for the seventh spot by virtue of the first tiebreaker, as Colorado defeated Kansas in head to head play. The seventh seed avoids a first round match with Nebraska.
Â
CU's final regular season match is Friday, Oct. 27 at 3:00 p.m. as the Buffs will take on Texas Tech at PVSC. The game will mark the final home match for Colorado's eight seniors, the first recruiting class at the University of Colorado. Tech can play the role of spoiler for Colorado, as a loss by the Buffs on Friday will end their season.
