CU Tops Texas Tech 2-0

October 27, 2000 | Soccer

BOULDER, Colo. -The University of Colorado women's soccer team (8-10, 4-6 Big 12) defeated the Texas Tech Raiders (4-14, 2-8 Big 12) 2-0 here Friday afternoon.

The win earned the Buffs a trip into this year's Big 12 postseason tournament. This is the second straight trip to the tournament for Colorado and their third Big 12 tournament in the team's five-year history. The Buffs earned the No. 7 seed in the tournament.

"I knew it was going to be close," said head coach Austin Daniels following the game. "Tech is better than their record shows, so I knew it was going to be a tight game."

Appropriately, the game-winning goal came from a senior on Colorado's annual Senior Day. The first score came at 28:43 into the first half on a Zoe Pascoe goal that was assisted by Allison Gausman and Andrea Matassa. She lofted a corner kick into the box, which Gausman deflected to Pascoe. The senior turned and fired, scoring the first goal of her career.

"This is the first time that Zoe has really played forward, and she's gotten more time and she has created a lot the last few games," said Daniels. "So it was nice for her to get the goal out of it." The second Buff goal came at the 80:47 mark off a Lindsay Galas header, also assisted by Matassa. Galas got in front of Texas Tech goalkeeper Brittany Peese, flicking ball over her hand and hitting the underside of the crossbar and into the goal with less than 10 minutes to play.

The Buff defense also played a great game, as Aimee Bugay, Sarah Nowfel and Tiffany Booth all had team saves off the Colorado goal line in the second half to stop potential Texas Tech goals. Buff goalkeeper Whitney Peterson had three saves on 11 Tech shots. Colorado had 20 shots in all, 10 on goal. Peese finished with seven saves on the day before being replaced by JoDee Campbell with 6:07 to play.

Colorado will now play Texas A&M in the first round of the Big 12 tournament at 4:00 p.m. MST on Wednesday, Nov. 1. The Aggies topped the Buffs 6-1 in regular season play on Sept. 24 in College Station. The official bracket will be released on Oct. 29 by the Big 12 office.
