BOULDER - Colorado forward Stephane Pelle lit up the boards tonight with a team-high 17 points helping the Buffs advance past Regis University, 77-56 Monday evening in a non-conference men's basketball game at the Coors Events Conference Center.
Pelle was an impressive 7-for-9 from the field while contributing five rebounds and sinking 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Sophomore guard Chevis Brimmer was equally impressive, hitting four of his seven shots from the field and coming up with 11 points and a team-high six assists.
Jason Carter returned to the CU lineup tonight by dominating the boards, leading the Buffs with seven rebounds and one blocked shot. Both teams played a close game early on, but Colorado finished the first half on a 15-0, keeping the Rangers scoreless in the last 5:33, as the Buffs jumped out to a commanding 37-24 lead at the interim.
"First of all, it was a great effort by Regis," commented CU head coach Ricardo Patton. "We knew they'd come in here fearless, because that's who they play for - a fearless coach. They made us change some things on both offense and defense, and really gave us some problems early on."
"It really is just a different kind of game when you play a smaller team," added Patton. "In particular, we did not have a good shooting night. When you don't shoot well, it makes it tougher to get your big guys open and keep them out of foul trouble."
It was the Rangers, however, that ran into foul trouble down the stretch. Regis forward Jeremy Bennett reached his foul limit late in the second half, while the team had six players with more than three fouls. The Buffs were also able to capitalize on 11 Regis turnovers by returning the ball to the other end for 15 points.
Colorado senior Nick Mohr rounded out the Buffaloes in double-digits with 10, with D.J. Harrison bringing down five off of the boards and contributing five points.
CU closes out its three-game homestand this Thursday Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. when it hosts non-conference opponent Rice at the CECC.
