Colorado Closes Out 2001 Season With 2-1 Win At Texas Tech

November 02, 2001 | Soccer

LUBBOCK, Texas - Tiffany Booth's first career goal with 35:06 left to play secured the Buffs' first Big 12 Conference victory of the season, a 2-1 win over Texas Tech at R.P. Fuller Stadium here Friday night.

The win improves the Buffs to 3-11-2 overall, and 1-7-2 while Tech closes its season at 4-15, and winless in league play at 0-10. The victory is the Buffs' school record third away from Boulder and concludes the 2001 campaign with an exclamation point.

"This is a good way to end a very difficult season," said CU head coach Bill Hempen.

Colorado nearly got on the scoreboard first when Lindsey Galas challenged Tech keeper Brittney Peese to a game of one-on-one 21 minutes into the game before Peese ended the attempt with the stuff and save. But it was Tech that broke the.silence when Rachel Mavris took a high shot from 18 yards out that went over Buff keeper Danielle Bassett's outstretched hands into the right corner of the net to put the Red Raiders up 1-0 with 7:32 left in the opening stanza.

The celebration lasted just over 2-minutes when Colorado's Ellen Falender placed the perfect cross from the far end of the field to Jessica Wollow who netted her second goal of the season with a header into the near post passed Peese with 5:31 remaining.

Not only were goals knotted at one a piece at halftime, but so were corner kicks ( 1-1) and saves (3-3) while the Buffs held the edge in shots (8-5), and Texas Tech in fouls (8-7).

Controlling the game the second half, Booth put the Buffs ahead 2-1 with 35:06 left in the game when she took the ball from Jessi Burgener and forced Peese out of the net then beat her to place the ball in the middle of the net for her first points of the season.

"We caught them off guard in a kind of counter attack and Jess dropped the ball into the middle where it caught my attention," said Booth. "It felt good to get my first goal in my third season here."

The Buffs nearly made it a three-goal cushion with a pair of breakaways late in the second half that were both called offsides by the linesmen and resulted in a yellow card to Buff head coach Bill Hempen per his reaction.

Tonight's game ended the 2001 season for the Buffs and the collegiate careers of seniors Kendall Pata, Whitney Peterson, Suzy Kiefer, Danielle Bassett, Heather Zonker and Jessica Wollow.
