Bulldogs Down Buffs, 81-73

December 01, 2001 | Men's Basketball

ATHENS, Ga. - Ezra Williams scored 26 points and Jonas Hayes did a good impression of his twin brother, leading unbeaten Georgia to an 81-73 victory over Colorado on Saturday.

The Bulldogs (5-0) are off to their best start since 1994-95, when they also began with five straight victories.

Georgia plays Georgia State on Tuesday, trying for its first 6-0 beginning since the Final Four season of 1982-83.

Williams and Hayes brought the Bulldogs back from an 11-point deficit in the first half. Williams hit six 3-pointers, to go along with nine rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Hayes picked up some of the scoring load from his brother, Jarvis, who is out for at least another week with a knee injury. The healthy Hayes scored 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting.

Georgia had not been ahead since the opening minutes until Williams made a 3-pointer with 9:54 remaining, giving the Bulldogs a 57-56 lead.

There were three more lead changes and three ties before Williams hit another trey with 5:04 left, putting Georgia ahead for good at 68-67.

Steve Thomas took over the rest of the way, scoring six of the Bulldogs' next nine points as they pulled away. He had 12 points overall.

D.J. Harrison led Colorado with 18 points, but the Buffaloes couldn't overcome 31 percent shooting (8-of-26) in the second half.

Georgia got off to a cold start, missing nine of their first 10 shots and falling behind 16-6 just 6{ minutes into the game.

Colorado (3-2) led 38-27 with less than three minutes to go before halftime, but Georgia finished strong.

Williams hit a 3-pointer while Chris Daniels was being fouled under the basket, positioning himself for a possible rebound. Daniels made one of the free throws for a four-point play.

On the Bulldogs' next trip, Daniels drove for a basket, was fouled by Chevis Brimmer and made the free throw for a three-point play.

Just like that, Georgia was back within four. The Buffaloes led 42-38 at the break.
