Buffs Rout Southern University, 106-74

December 13, 2001 | Men's Basketball

BOULDER - Stephane Pelle scored a team-high 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Blair Wilson added a career-best 20 points, including six 3-pointers, as Colorado defeated Southern University, 106-74, Thursday night at the Coors Events Conference Center.

Also boosting the Buffaloes were D.J. Harrison, with 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Michel Morandais with 13 and seven rebounds. It was Harrison's third career double-double, while Pelle recorded his 14th.

Colorado (6-2) also got a big boost from its defense in the second half breaking open a close opening half that saw the Buffs only leading by a 49-44 margin. Much of Southern's offensive punch came from Brian Johnson, who scored 21 of his 25 points for the Jaguars (0-7) in the first half.

"I think our game came out in the second half with more focus and intensity," said CU head coach Ricardo Patton. "Early on we struggled offensively, but we expected to play well on defense. I see these guys making shots in practice and it's a matter of time before they start hitting consistently."

Victor Tarver had 18 points for Southern University, and Tim Johnson contributed 12 points.

In the second half, Colorado held Southern University to just one field goal in the first nine minutes outscoring the Jaguars, 39-5. Much of the damage was done by Wilson, who connected on five three-pointers during the run.

"It felt good to get into a rhythm and in knowing my teammates were looking for me," said Wilson. "It's about winning more than who is scoring the points. For me, it's just a matter of confidence."

CU won for the third straight time and are idle until Dec. 30 when they host Wisconsin-Milwaukee at 7 p.m.
