Buffs Escape Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 93-87
December 30, 2001 | Men's Basketball
BOULDER - Blair Wilson converted a layup and two free-throws in the final 42 seconds of the game as Colorado beat Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 93-87 Sunday night at the Coors Events/Conference Center. CU won its fourth straight and competed for the first time in nearly three weeks (17 days) during the holiday break.
Wisconsin-Milwaukee (5-7) had pulled to within 89-87 behind a 3-pointer by Clay Tucker. On the ensuing inbound pass, Wilson scored an easy layup after being left all alone underneath Colorado's basket. He was later fouled in the closing seconds.
Stephane Pelle recorded his third double-double of season (15th career) netting 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead two other Colorado (7-2) players in the double-double category. David Harrison notched his first double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds and his brother D.J. Harrison added 14 points and 11 rebounds. The elder Harrison also tallied his fourth career double-double. Wilson and sophomore Chevis Brimmer rounded out the double-digit scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Brimmer also added a pair of career-bests with eight assists and four steals.
Tucker led Wisconsin-Milwaukee with 21 points and Ronnie Jones had 19 points. All of Tucker's scoring came from beyond the arch as the Panthers scored 17 3-pointers, a record for Colorado opponents.
Wisconsin-Milwaukee made 11 first half 3-pointers and led 54-49 at the break. It's the first time this season the Buffs rallied from the intermission to claim victory.
"We knew going into the game after watching them on film that Wisconsin-Milwaukee would be good," said CU head coach Ricardo Patton. "They came in shooting the ball extremely well and we didn't get back in transition as we should have. I think the 17 days off certainly showed tonight and everything was a little bit off."
CU (7-2) continues its longest homestand of the season by hosting St. Mary's College (Calif.), Wednesday, Jan. 2 at 7 p.m.
